1st Lieutenant W. Smythe served aboard the G.F.S. Tyr when it crash-landed on Aether. Smythe may have been a squad leader of one of the two forces, and was one of two 1st Lieutenants. Smythe was killed by Dark Splinters while defending the GFMC Compound.
Smythe body must be one of the troopers with damaged Armor computer, located on top of a crate beside the data terminal.

Non-canon warning: This article or section contains information that may not be considered an official part of the Metroid series in the overall storyline by Nintendo.
Smythe's name was given as 1LT K. Deckard in the preview trailer featured on the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bonus Disc. The scene that reveals this name appears to be an alternate version of that in the game, panning down early just before he would be killed in the final version. The name most likely came from Retro Studios senior designer Karl Deckard.

Our Command and Control chamber is secured. We are awaiting reinforcements and supplies. A few hostiles managed to escape; hopefully they won't come back with friends.
