Aeion Gauge and Map

Metroid: Samus Returns

The Aeion Gauge is a feature in Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. While it is part of the Heads-Up Display in Dread, in Samus Returns it is displayed on the lower screen of the Nintendo 3DS, with the Map. The gauge is a yellow bar that displays the amount of Aeion energy Samus currently has, which depletes when using one, or any combination, of the following Aeion abilities:

In Samus Returns, Aeion is consumed in varying amounts depending on the ability, but in Metroid Dread all abilities consume the entire gauge.

It is also depleted if Samus is hit by the Autoad's energy attack. In Samus Returns the gauge is replenished from Aeion Orbs dropped by killed enemies. The Aeion Gauge is also filled after a Chozo Seal is activated, or Samus steps into a Big Aeion Orb. In Dread, enemies no longer drop Aeion Orbs and the Aeion Gauge instead passively recharges over time, at a different rate depending on which power was last used. Aeion Tanks expand the gauge in Samus Returns, but are never found in Dread due to their full gauge consumption.

HOW TO PLAY - BASICS - THE TOUCHSCREEN (p. 6)
AEION ENERGY
"The yellow bar below Samus' Energy Points and ammunition total is her Aeion Energy bar. Aeion Energy is expended every time you employ an Aeion Ability such as Scan Pulse. When the bar empties, you can't use Aeion Abilities until you refill the bar at least partway. Do this by grabbing yellow orbs dropped by enemies, or by retrieving Big Aeion Orbs, which are displayed on your in-game map as yellow circles, and marked as B on our guide maps."
