Alcoon[1] is an enemy in Super Metroid.
Description[]
The creatures are bipedal Dragons, and have short, stubby wings. The anatomical purpose for these wings is unknown, as they are too small for flight. They may aid the Alcoons in vaulting out of their burrows to surprise their prey.
This creature lives in Norfair and Crateria and pops up from its hiding place as Samus Aran approaches and starts shooting fireballs at her. Alcoons are a green color in Crateria and a crimson-orange color in Norfair and Ridley's Hideout. These palette changes are purely cosmetic however, as they are all exactly the same otherwise. These creatures can be damaged by both beams and Missiles; by using the Wave Beam, Samus can shoot an Alcoon that is still hidden.
They are only encountered in three rooms: the Crateria Chozo Ruins entrance", "Norfair fork" and "Spring Ball maze".

Trivia[]
- In the internal data, Alcoon is referred to as Ndra. The "dra" portion of this name may be derived from Dragon.
- If Samus has the Wave Beam and shoots an Alcoon that is still hiding and Samus has less than full Energy, the destroyed Alcoon will leave behind an Energy Capsule stuck under the surface that is impossible to get.
- Despite the two species being apparently unrelated, Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide refers to Genesis as Alcoons.[2]
