Skipping Bomb Torizo on the PAL version of the game
"Arm pumping" is a technique in Super Metroid that is used for Speedrunning the game. It requires Samus Aran to rapidly change her cannon position, mainly angle up and angle down.[1] Samus moves forward one pixel each time this is done, resulting in an overall faster movement speed when done continuously. Commonly, it is executed by spamming the shoulder buttons on the controller (i.e. R and L on a SNES controller).
On the PAL version of the game, the most notable use for this technique is to completely skip the Torizo boss while still picking up the Bombs. This requires careful timing as the door out of the room will close very quickly after collecting the Bombs. If done successfully, it is possible to return to the room later in the game and kill the Torizo in a single hit with advanced power-ups. Skipping this Torizo is not physically possible to perform on NTSC region versions of the game without tool assistance or major glitches.[2]
