Miis battling Ridley during Assault Mission

Assault Mission is one of three game modes available in the Metroid Blast attraction of Nintendo Land. It acts as the single-player/co-op campaign for Metroid Blast.

Description[]

In Assault Mission, 1 to 5 Miis can engage in various challenges as a team. Using the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk, up to four players can play as Samus Miis and engage in ground-based combat. Only one player, using the Wii U GamePad, can play as a Mii piloting the Gunship.

In single-player, the player can choose whether to play as Samus or the Gunship. When playing alone with the GamePad, the TV will be used as a "LIVE FEED" style camera, showing the action from different angles and places.

Each mission presents a challenge that the Miis must complete. Many missions involve defeating waves of incoming enemies, although some of them require collecting Mii Tokens or defending NPC Miis. Additionally, Miis can achieve a Master Rank by fulfilling an additional, more challenging objective for each mission.

During multiplayer, each player has a specific set of Mii Tokens that must be collected. Other than this, Assault Mission's difficulty is apparently not scaled to the number of players. As a result, many missions are significantly easier in multiplayer than they are in single-player.

Although there is no friendly fire for the uncharged shots, blasts from the Gunship will stun ground players. The charged shots (Charge Bombs and Missiles) can damage other players and the shooters themselves. Samus Miis cannot shoot at the Gunship; instead, they will automatically grapple onto it and hang from underneath while still able to fire their Arm Cannons.

During co-op, if any player is defeated during the mission, they will wander around as a Zero Suit Mii who will be ignored by enemies. Picking up a heart or item will restore their armor and return them to the game. However, if all Miis are reduced to their Zero Suits, the mission is failed.

If the mission is failed twice, Monita will grant players the option to pick up a Golden Helmet that increases the Mii's hit points to 6 and provides the rapid-fire ability. However, using the helmet will immediately disqualify players from achieving the Master Rank during that attempt.

Each time Assault Mission is played, the player earns coins to be spent earning prizes from the Nintendo Land Plaza pachinko game. Coins may also be dropped by defeated enemies during a mission.

Standard Missions[]

1. First Contact[]

This mission takes place in a stage that is exclusive to Assault Mission and cannot be played in the competitive multiplayer modes. It features a "virtual cyber world" aesthetic with dark surfaces highlighted by a neon blue grid pattern. The music for this stage is Samus Aran's Appearance Fanfare, followed by militaristic drumming.

The objective of this mission is to defeat all enemies. There are five waves of enemies, consisting entirely of standard green Geemers.

The Master Rank condition requires all players to achieve at least 50% hit accuracy.

If this is the player's first time playing Assault Mission, this mission will be preceded by a tutorial where players navigate the full stage while shooting at Targets. The mission itself only takes place in the arena located at the end of the tutorial stage.

2. Geemer Invasion[]

This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are three enemy waves, consisting entirely of Geemers. The purple Geemers, which fire homing Rockets at Miis, are introduced in this mission.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to only attack enemies with the Charge Bomb and/or Missile. Regular shots may be fired, but cannot be used on enemies.

3. Approaching Cyclons[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 3. Stirring Cyclons. This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are seven enemy waves consisting of Geemers and the newly-introduced Cyclons, which make their debut in the third wave.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to take no damage at all. Losing a Rapid-Fire Helmet will not count against the Master Rank.

4. Token Sweep[]

This mission takes place in the Training Zone.

The objective is to collect 12 Mii Tokens within a time limit of five minutes. Standard Geemers and Cyclons are found throughout the stage, and some Geemers will only spawn when a specific Mii Token is acquired.

The Master Rank condition requires at least three minutes remaining on the clock when the last token is collected. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to just two minutes.

5. Zebesian Incursion[]

This mission takes place in the Training Zone.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are four enemy waves, consisting entirely of standard Zebesians, which are newly introduced in this mission.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to take no damage at all. Losing a Rapid-Fire Helmet will not count against the Master Rank.

6. Cyclon Infestation[]

Cyclon Queen

6. Cyclon Infestation

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 6. Eye of the Storm. This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to destroy all enemies. There are five enemy waves consisting of Cyclons and Geemers. The final wave features just one enemy: the Cyclon Queen. Although the Cyclon Queen endlessly spawns Cyclons, these are automatically destroyed when the Queen is defeated and therefore do not have to be fought to complete the wave.

The Master Rank condition requires all players to achieve at least 50% hit accuracy.

7. Destroy 10 Cyclons[]

NL Cyclons Exposed

7. Destroy 10 Cyclons

This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to destroy 10 Cyclons. All Cyclons appear at once at the beginning of the mission, along with the newly-introduced Ridley. Ridley behaves as though it is the first phase of his boss battle, therefore using neither of his claw attacks. However, Ridley does not have a displayed health bar; if his head, chest, and tail armor are destroyed, Ridley retreats and flies away from the stage. Only the Cyclons may be defeated.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to only attack enemies with the Charge Bomb and/or Missile. Regular shots may be fired, but cannot be used on enemies.

8. Infernal Battle[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 8. Heated Battle. This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are four enemy waves consisting of Geemers, Cyclons, and Zebesians.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to take no damage at all. Losing a Rapid-Fire Helmet will not count against the Master Rank.

9. Cyclon Queen's Tokens[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 9. Stormy Token Sweep. This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector.

The objective is to collect 12 Mii Tokens within a time limit of five minutes. Zebesians are found throughout the stage, along with the titular Cyclon Queen. When the Mii Token on the center platform is picked up, Geemers spawn around it.

The Master Rank condition requires at least 3:30 remaining on the clock when the last token is collected. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to just a minute and a half.

10. Hostile Colossus[]

This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector. The background music for this mission is a battle remix of Brinstar (Metroid) instead of Magmoor Caverns.

This mission introduces Kraid as a boss, and the objective is to defeat him. Kraid appears in the center of the Volcanic Sector's lava pit, which has a platform removed to accommodate for his presence. During the second and third phases of the battle, Kraid's body segments will pop out and spawn Zebesians to hinder the Miis' progress; aside from this, there are no other enemies during this mission.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to have perfect accuracy with Charge Bombs and/or Missiles, whether for hitting power buttons or damaging Kraid. Missing a single shot will disqualify players from mastering this mission.

Completing this mission for the first time will unlock the Survival option in Metroid Blast's Ground Battle mode.

11. Geemers![]

This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to destroy 100 Geemers within a time limit of five minutes. All three variants of Geemers spawn endlessly, providing more than enough targets to meet the requirement. They can be quickly taken out by shooting the newly-introduced red Geemers, which explode and damage nearby enemies.

The Master Rank condition requires at least three minutes remaining on the clock when the hundredth Geemer is defeated. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to just two minutes.

12. Subzero Combat[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled Sub-Zero Combat. This mission takes place in the Ice Sector.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are six enemy waves consisting of Geemers, Cyclons, and ice Zebesians.

The Master Rank condition requires all players to achieve at least 50% hit accuracy.

13. Metroid Hunt[]

This mission takes place in the Ice Sector.

The objective is to destroy 10 Metroids. The newly-introduced Metroids are the only enemies in this mission, and they appear in four enemy waves. They can only be defeated with the Ice Charge Shot, which is also introduced in this mission, conveniently spawning in front of the Miis at the beginning.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to have perfect accuracy with the Ice Charge Shot. Missing a single shot will disqualify players from mastering this mission.

15. Zebesians Incoming[]

This mission takes place at the Sea Tower.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are five enemy waves consisting of Metroids, flying Zebesians, and Cyclons. At the start of the mission, an Ice Charge Shot spawns near the Mii, allowing them to fight the Metroids.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to take no damage at all. Losing a Rapid-Fire Helmet will not count against the Master Rank.

14. Defend Your Allies[]

This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector. The platform in the center lava pit is removed during this mission.

The objective is to defend three ally Zero Suit Miis for two minutes. They are constantly being targeted by Metroids that will drop them into the lava after ten seconds, but the player Miis can shoot the Metroids to force them to let go. After one minute, additional Metroids spawn, along with Zebesians that attack the player Miis.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to take no damage at all. Losing a Rapid-Fire Helmet will not count against the Master Rank.

16. Evade the Snipers[]

This mission takes place at the Sea Tower.

The objective is to collect 12 Mii Tokens within a time limit of five minutes. Purple Zebesians and Geemers guard some of the tokens, but the most common enemies are the newly-introduced sniper Zebesians strategically positioned throughout the Sea Tower.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from firing a single shot, even if it does not hit an enemy. However, Samus Miis are still allowed to use the Grapple Beam to more quickly traverse the tower.

17. Air Supremacy[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 17. Master of the Skies. This mission takes place at the Sea Tower.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are four enemy waves, consisting almost entirely of airborne enemies such as flying Zebesians and Cyclon Queens. However, a couple sniper Zebesians appear in the final wave as the only grounded enemies.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from picking up any items, including health.

18. Frosty Token Sweep[]

This mission takes place in the Ice Sector.

The objective is to collect 12 Mii Tokens within a time limit of three minutes. Zebesians, Metroids, and Geemers guard the tokens.

The Master Rank condition requires at least one minute remaining on the clock when the last token is collected. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to just two minutes.

19. Strike from Behind[]

This mission takes place in the Training Zone.

The objective is to defeat all enemies. There are four enemy waves, consisting entirely of Zebesians. Most notably, these waves include the newly-introduced red variant of Zebesians, which have an additional power button on their backsides that must be shot. Ice Charge Shots are available to make them easier to fight.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from using any charge attacks, include the Ice Charge Shot. This naturally makes it much trickier to fight the red Zebesians.

20. The Final Battle[]

This mission takes place in the Space Port. The background music for this mission is Vs. Meta Ridley instead of Brinstar (Metroid).

The objective of this mission is to defeat Ridley. He is the only enemy who appears during this mission. This is the first mission where Ridley can be defeated, with a boss battle that lasts three phases.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from dodging (if playing as Samus) or dashing (if piloting the Gunship) throughout the entire mission.

Completing this mission for the first time will earn the Star Player rank for the Metroid Blast attraction.

Extra Missions[]

21. More Geemers[]

This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to destroy 100 Geemers within a time limit of three minutes. There are four enemy waves consisting mostly of Geemers, including the purple and red variants. Additionally, Zebesian snipers appear in the first two waves, although they presumably do not count towards completing the mission.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to only attack enemies with the Charge Bomb and/or Missile. Regular shots may be fired, but cannot be used on enemies.

22. Unidentified Enemy Object[]

NL Ice Ridley and Flying Zebesian

22. Unidentified Enemy Object

This mission takes place in the Ice Sector. The background music for this mission is Vs. Meta Ridley instead of the normal Ice Sector theme.

The objective is to defeat Ice Ridley, who is introduced in this mission. During the first phase of the battle, he appears alone. At the start of his second and third phases, flying Zebesians spawn to accompany him.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from picking up any items, including health.

23. Metroid Rush[]

This mission takes place in the Training Zone.

The objective is to destroy 15 Metroids. Metroids spawn endlessly in large numbers, more than enough to meet the requirement; most of the challenge stems from not being overwhelmed by the Metroids. Occasionally, a flying or sniper Zebesian will spawn as well.

The Master Rank condition requires Miis to have perfect accuracy with the Ice Charge Shot. Missing a single shot will disqualify players from mastering this mission.

24. Kraid's Army[]

This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector. The background music for this mission is a battle remix of Brinstar (Metroid) instead of Magmoor Caverns.

The objective is to defeat Kraid, with a time limit of five minutes. Kraid himself is fought exactly the same way as in mission 10. Hostile Colossus, but now he is accompanied by numerous enemies populating the Volcanic Sector, in addition to the Zebesians that normally protect him. At the beginning of the mission, purple Geemers appear and fire Rockets at the Miis. The second and third phases of the boss battle cause Cyclons to spawn as well.

The Master Rank condition requires at least one minute remaining on the clock when Kraid is defeated. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to four minutes.

25. Token Sweep[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 25. Thrilling Token Sweep. This mission takes place in the Space Port.

The objective is to collect 12 Mii Tokens within a time limit of five minutes. The tokens are guarded by Metroids and Zebesians, including the flying, sniper, and red variants of the latter.

The Master Rank condition requires at least three minutes remaining on the clock when the last token is collected. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to just two minutes.

26. Defend Your Allies 2[]

This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector. The platform in the center lava pit is removed during this mission.

The objective is to defend three ally Zero Suit Miis for two minutes. Just like mission 14. Defend Your Allies, the player Miis must stop Metroids from dropping the ally Miis into the lava pit. This time, Ice Ridley spawns at the beginning of the mission and will attack the player Miis. After one minute, flying Zebesians and additional Metroids begin to spawn.

The Master Rank condition requires Ice Ridley to be defeated. Although he does not have a displayed health bar, he behaves as though it is the third phase of his boss battle, and will be destroyed after only one round of repeatedly shooting his back button.

27. De-iced[]

In PAL versions of the game, this mission is titled 27. Iceless. This mission takes place in the Training Zone.

The objective is to defeat 15 enemies within a time limit of five minutes. Metroids and Zebesians constantly spawn throughout the mission. The sniper Zebesians are the easiest enemies to defeat, since they go down in just one shot. The Metroids are the hardest, since the Ice Charge Shot is not available during this mission (as implied by the mission's title); the only way to defeat a Metroid is to first trick an ice Zebesian into freezing it.

The Master Rank condition requires at least three minutes remaining on the clock when the fifteenth enemy is defeated. Essentially, this reduces the time limit to just two minutes.

28. Ridley and Ice Ridley[]

NL Ridley and Ice Ridley Battle

28. Ridley and Ice Ridley

This mission takes place in the Ice Sector. The background music for this mission is Vs. Meta Ridley instead of the normal Ice Sector theme.

The objective of this mission is to defeat Ridley and Ice Ridley. Both bosses appear together at the same time and are the only enemies encountered during this mission. They may be defeated in either order.

The Master Rank condition requires all players to achieve at least 50% hit accuracy.

29. On Familiar Ground[]

This mission takes place in the same unnamed stage as the practice tutorial.

The objective of this mission is to defeat all enemies. There are six enemy waves, for a total of 100 enemies. These enemies include all variants of Geemers, Zebesians, and Cyclons.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from using Charge Bombs or Missiles during this mission. Naturally, this means that it takes much longer to defeat red Zebesians and clear out the large waves of weak enemies.

30. The True Final Battle[]

NL Kraid and Ridley

30. The True Final Battle

This mission takes place in the Volcanic Sector. The background music for this mission is a battle remix of Brinstar (Metroid) instead of Magmoor Caverns.

The objective of this mission is to defeat Kraid. Kraid himself is fought exactly the same way as in mission 10. Hostile Colossus, but now he is accompanied by Ridley in addition to the Zebesians that normally protect him. Ridley uses all of his attacks but he will regenerate all of his armor after losing it, making him impossible to defeat. When Kraid is defeated, both bosses to simultaneously explode.

The Master Rank condition forbids Miis from picking up any items, including health.

Official data[]

Nintendo Land Manual[]

Metroid Blast (p. 10)
Assault Mission
• 1-5 Players
In this mode, the player with the GamePad controls the Gunship, and players with a Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk™ each control a Samus™ character. Work together to fight your way through your assigned mission. If your life is reduced to zero, you'll be out of the battle and won't be able to fight until you pick up an item that gives you life. If the whole team is out, you fail the mission.

Trivia[]

  • Assault Mission is the first time that Ridley and Kraid are depicted fighting alongside each other in a videogame. It is also the first time that Ridley fights alongside a fellow member of his species.
  • In all of the events in Assault Mission, Ridley will materialize out of thin air, while Kraid will always rise up from the ground. This may be an homage to the characters' respective introductions in Super Metroid.
