The Autector[1] is a Chozo robot found on planet ZDR in Metroid Dread.
Description[]
The Autector is a small robot, likely used by the Mawkin tribe as a security device. It has a circular core with three extruding panels, giving it an overall triangular shape. A single red light, possibly its eye, is located in its center.
Autectors are typically found in E.M.M.I. Zones, although they can be found in other rooms of areas such as Dairon and Ferenia. They are embedded on the floor, with only the red light from their center giving away their position. When approached by Samus Aran, a triggered Autector will spring up into the air and then self-destruct, damaging Samus if she is caught in its blast radius. In E.M.M.I. Zones, the Autector's explosion poses an additional danger: the sound can be detected by a nearby E.M.M.I. and thereby attract its attention. Samus needs to act quickly to disable the Autector before it self-destructs; the Dash Melee is most efficient early on since it can instantly destroy the Autector, but stronger weaponry such as Missiles are also effective. When destroyed, an Autector drops many item pickups.
Trivia[]
- The name "Autector" seems to be a portmanteau of the prefix "aut-" and the word "detector". The former is shared with many other Chozo automatons from Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid Dread. The latter refers to the Autector's function in detecting Samus's presence.
