An Autool[1][2] is a small robot of Chozo origin that appears in Metroid Dread.

Description[]

Autools are found in nearly all E.M.M.I. Zones across planet ZDR, where they occasionally detach from docks on the walls and ceilings to patrol the area.

Autools serve as traps for the unaware, as the noise Samus makes when colliding with an Autool will alert the E.M.M.I. in Search Mode. Autools can be destroyed with Missiles or the Charge Beam, but doing so will also attract an E.M.M.I.'s attention. Once the E.M.M.I. in a zone has been destroyed, this is no longer a problem. Destroying an Autool rewards significant amounts of Energy Capsules or Missile Ammo. In one instance, after the E.M.M.I. are reactivated by the newly X-infected Quiet Robe, an Autool is destroyed by E.M.M.I.-05IM freezing it and then ramming through it. E.M.M.I. can also destroy Autools they come into contact with in gameplay.[3]

The Chozo letters "AI" are written on one side of their chassis, possibly intended as the Chozo word for "one".[note 1]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Autool" seems to be a portmanteau of the prefix "aut-" and the word "tool". The former is shared with many other Chozo automatons from Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid Dread.
  • Although the Autool's in-game model bears the letters "AI", concept artwork in Metroid Mission Logs instead shows the letters "M" or "MT", including the artwork for the Autool's finalized design.
  • An Autool is used in the Samus Screen tutorial for the Missile, demonstrating its effectiveness against robotic enemies.

Notes[]

  1. ^ "Ai" is an approximate transcription; the Chozo translation of "one" is spoken aloud, but never explicitly appears in writing outside this possible instance.
