The Blogg is a large, aquatic predator native to the Torvus Bog.

Description[]

A highly dangerous creature with large jaws, it is one of the most dangerous threats to Samus Aran when she is underwater.

Bloggs have a nearly invincible hide covering their bodies, easily repelling small arms fire. Firing heavier weapons will agitate the creature but not inflict any damage, making the aquatic beast nearly impossible to harm. However, when agitated or on its own action, it will attempt to rush a target with its jaws spread open. In doing so, it exposes its vulnerable mouth. This gives Samus a small time frame to shoot and inflict damage into the mouth area. If a rushing Blogg hits a wall, it will become momentarily stunned, allowing time for Samus to escape or reposition herself as the Blogg recovers from its massive impact. If Samus engages with a Blogg while in Morph Ball mode, a Blogg may attempt to relentlessly chase after her with its mouth wide open. Should it catch her in its maw, the beast will gnaw at her, delivering damage and eventually spitting her back out. During this time, Samus can lay Bombs or use the Boost Ball to damage the creature's mouth. Contact with a Power Bomb will repel the creature with incredible force, vaporizing it instantly. Once obtained, the Sonic Boom is capable of eliminating these creatures with ease by piercing through their thick hide with a direct shot at their mouth region.

They are located in Hydrodynamo Station, Gathering Hall, Training Chamber, Fortress Transport Access and Catacombs.

The Blogg is the adult stage of its species, being preceded by the weaker more vulnerable infant Bloggling. The leader of a group of Bloggs will become a larger and more powerful Alpha Blogg capable of firing sonic disruption blasts. A Blogg whose body is invaded and possessed by an Ing is called a Dark Blogg.

Development data[]

An unused Logbook entry of a Blogg exists within the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bonus Disc. Its entry is slightly different from the final and it uses a simplistically designed model for its entry, shared with the Bloggling and Dark Blogg; black body with red mouth and white teeth. Notably, the Bonus Disc mentions that the Blogg is able to fire a sonic blast at foes, heavily implying that a Blogg was to use this ability in battle in the final. It is unknown why this ability was semi-removed, though it is possible it may be gameplay related. One possibility could be the difficulty of dodging such an attack without the Gravity Boost, or there may have been too many cramped spaces where Blogg are located at for the ability to be used effectively. Curiously in the final, the Dark Blogg's scan wasn't updated to remove the Blogg's mention of the unused sonic blast ability. It is unknown if a Blogg's Sonic Blast ability can be restored in the final via hacking.

In the final, only the Alpha Blogg possesses this ability, and it can fire three blasts in consecutive succession. An Alpha Blogg's entry is not located in the Bonus Disc, suggesting it was added later in development along with the rest of the "super-sized" Alpha variant creatures (Alpha Splinter and Alpha Sandigger). Like the Bonus Disc entry for the Blogg states, the Alpha Blogg's sonic blasts can be easily detected using the Echo Visor, however, this requires Sequence Breaking to witness as the Echo Visor is obtained long after the Alpha Blogg's battle and there is only one Alpha Blogg encountered throughout the entire adventure.

The Blogg fires a blast of sound to stun its underwater prey, then closes in with three tooth-filled maws to finish the job. Sound-sensing gear can be used to easily detect the Blogg's sonic blasts. It has a weak spot inside its mouth; the rest of its body is covered with a thick, damage-resistant hide.

Trivia[]

  • Collecting a Power Bomb via Secret World techniques without collecting the Gravity Boost, then draining the Half-pipe in Gathering Hall, and then reloading the room causes a flying Blogg.[2] Similarly, morphing or using the Screw Attack on the precise surface of a water body will cause the water to disappear until it or the room is exited.[3] Both of these methods allow for the Screw Attack to be used on a Blogg, which is not normally possible.
  • A Blogg's weakness of being damaged in the mouth either by Arm Cannon fire or by use of Bombs is similarly shared with the weakness of a Queen Metroid.
  • Using Sequence Breaking, both a normal and Dark Blogg can be encountered within the same room.
