The Body Adaptation Machine (生体調整器 Seitai Chōseiki )[2] is a technology created by the Chozo.
Description[]
These machines serve the function of infusing Chozo blood and adapting the user to be able to survive in the planet's environment. Samus Aran used this Machine to gain her Chozo reflexes and agility in preparation for receiving the Power Suit. The procedure is described as "extremely delicate".[3]
In the Metroid manga, they are first seen briefly in Volume 1 and then prominently featured in the plot of Volume 2. In this instance, they are shown as large orbs (possibly of energy) attached to a structure somewhat resembling a nuclear explosion. During Samus's mission to save Chozo survivors on Zebes, she discovered that the Space Pirates were attempting to use the Machines to adapt to the planet. An explosion caused by Commander Mauk and Kreatz to rescue Samus ended up destroying the Machines. Though Ridley assumes Samus had friends, Gray Voice (pretending to work with the Pirates) convinces him that the explosion was probably engineered ahead of time by Samus to help her escape. The Chozo prisoners are then ordered to repair the Machines. Afterword, Samus learns that it was Gray Voice whose DNA was integrated with hers, making him a second father to her.
In its beginning cutscene, Metroid: Other M features a clip of Samus being infused with her energy. In this scenario, Samus is surrounded by a red and white aura. Her face is shown, opening her eyes, before it flashes forward in time to a perspective of her face through her visor, in the re-enactment of Mother Brain's battle in Super Metroid.
The cutscene just prior to the Raven Beak boss fight in Metroid Dread shows a clip of Samus inside the Body Adaptation Machine with various Chozo, including Raven Beak himself, observing it, revealing that he provided the Mawkin DNA inside her. Oddly, Samus in this scene appears slightly older than either the Manga or Other M (as she resembled a pre-teen girl in the scene, while both the manga and Other M depicted her as a toddler at the time). She was also shown to wear the Zero Suit in this scene, whereas in both the manga and Other M, she was implied to be nude during the procedure.
Trivia[]
- The process of body adaptation looks extremely similar to the stage of development in 36 to 40 week old human fetuses in the womb.
- Body Adaptation Machines have only been featured on Zebes. It is unknown if they were also used in the Chozo civilizations on SR388, Elysia and Tallon IV.
