Bugcrystal is the internal file name for creatures found in Area 4 of SR388 in Metroid: Samus Returns.

Description[]

Bugcrystals are quadrupedal arthropods with a rocky, plate-like torso, no separate head, and blue crystals on their backs. They vary greatly in size, from small (Bugcrystal01) to very large (Bugcrystal02); it is likely that these specimens are the same species at different stages of their life cycle. Bugcrystal02 also has greater clusters of crystals compared to Bugcrystal01.

Bugcrystals can be seen walking around in the background of Area 4. Clusters of blue crystals, nearly identical to those on the Bugcrystal's back, are also seen at other locations in the area, which suggests the species might be utilizing natural camouflage.

They are seemingly docile, since they ignore Samus Aran and do not attack her. In return, Samus cannot harm the Bugcrystals in any way.

Trivia[]

  • Like other non-hostile background creatures, Bugcrystals are original to Samus Returns and did not exist in Metroid II: Return of Samus. Therefore, since they did not appear in Metroid Fusion, it is unknown if any Bugcrystals were infected or mimicked by X Parasites.
  • Similar crystals with a dulled black coloring are found at some locations in Area 4, which could possibly be dead or dormant Bugcrystals. Red and yellow crystals of this type are also seen in the nest of the first Zeta Metroid.
