Butterflies[1] are small, flying insects in Metroid Prime.

Description[]

Butterflies are seen in the Tallon Overworld and Chozo Ruins areas of Tallon IV and make high-pitched buzzing sounds. They are often found in close proximity to Saturnines, lichen or Sap Sacs. Some butterflies are seen flying near Flaahgra's face, most likely attracted to an unseen substance secreted from the mushroom-like structures atop its head.

A dark red variant is present in Metroid Prime Lair, above flesh-like holes in the ground. They are hard to notice depending on how focused Samus is on targeting Metroid Prime.

Though a variety of colorations are seen throughout the game, the butterflies have only a single texture file, which is orange. All other colorations are produced through some sort of shading technique.

Butterflies can be found in the Canyon Cavern, Transport Tunnel A, Transport Tunnel D, the Deck Beta Transit Hall, the North Atrium, the Sunchamber, and the Crossway.

In Metroid Prime Remastered, Butterflies more closely resemble mosquitoes, and are quieter.[2]
