Cancerous rock stub

The two types of Cancerous rock nubs from Metroid Prime.

Cancerous rock nubs[1] (named internally as CancerNub) are organic growths that can be seen near and within the Metroid Prime Lair in Metroid Prime.

Description[]

They generally appear as seed-like Phazon growths sprouting from the surfaces they are planted in, being grey stem-like structures with veins of blue Phazon around its outer blue shell with a pulsating green line within its center divide. They are first encountered in Subchamber Five directly above the hole leading into the Metroid Prime Lair. They cannot be destroyed by Samus's weaponry.

As Samus enters the Metroid Prime Lair, more cancerous nubs can be seen growing all around. Some of these growths can be seen sprouting a large crimson-orange sphere of hardened Red Phazon. During the battle with Metroid Prime, its powerful shockwaves immediately decimate any Cancerous Rock Nubs nearby, starting as soon as the battle commences. When destroyed, these nubs may leave behind Ultra Energy and Missiles for Samus to collect.

It would seem that these rock nubs also mirror the Chozo Totems found above the room in the Artifact Temple. They are named in concept art of the game.

"These are the infected geometry pockets that surround the metroid prime entry lair. The texture should be pale red, sore looking with a slight glow of amber."

Trivia[]

  • Their name seems to refer to the fact that Phazon is a "cancerous element".
  • In Dark Torvus Arena in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, four statues circle the arena where the Boost Guardian is fought and are similar in appearance to the cancerous rock nub. The Boost Guardian can destroy the statues and they yield Ultra Energy pickups for Samus' use in an identical manner as the cancerous rock nubs.
  • The blue energy pulsating around the nubs glows more green near the center core of the nub. Coincidentally, a similar looking green pulse was a detail featured on the beta Phazon Suit, which also featured a metallic -blue/chrome outer plating.
  • When the smaller nubs pulsate, a green arrow-like design can be seen in the center. This pattern resembles a Spider Ball Track.
