The Choot[1][2][3] is a Zebesian species, which is nearly identical to the Chute Leech found on SR388.
Description[]
Much like the Chute Leech, the Choot has a flat body and lies dormant until another organism, such as Samus walks by. It jumps into the air and then glides down, swaying from side to side using its parachute-like body.
The Choot has rows of teeth visible on its purple underside. They also seem to possess only a single pair of yellow eyes, and are naturally colored green. They are more of a nuisance than a serious threat. While they are mostly seen on dry land, some can be found submerged underwater near the Wrecked Ship.
Metroid Fusion[]
Before the events of Metroid Fusion, several Choots[3] were captured and brought on board the BSL Station for studies. Eventually, all Choots (along with most other bioforms inside the station) were infected and/or mimicked by the X Parasites.
The X variant of Choot is colored blue, appears to have rough skin (contrary to the natural variant) and glides down much slower and without the swaying effect; on the way down, it will periodically spit globs of acid. It also has noticeably larger fangs. The new additions are most likely due to X tampering with their hosts' DNA.
Metroid Fusion: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide refers to Choots as "flat, blue creatures", while Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide refers to them by name.
Connection to the Chute Leech[]
The Choot in Super Metroid behaves identically to the Chute Leech in Return of Samus.
Although their respective English names are different, the Chute Leech and Choot share the same Japanese name チュート[4][5], which may suggest that these creatures were originally intended to be the same species in Japan. It is currently unconfirmed if the normal Choot in Super Metroid also share the same Japanese name; however, its internal name is Hiru.
The Chute Leech's updated design in Metroid: Samus Returns looks much more similar to the version of Choots seen in Fusion. However, unlike other enemies such as Halzyn and Hornoad, its behaviors were not updated to more closely match the more aggressive Fusion Choot.

"They lie in wait on the ground then jump at you as you pass. Several hits are needed so it's probably best to avoid them."
