Chozo symbols

Runic Symbol concept art.

The Chozo language is a written mode of communication often found in the Chozo Ruins in Metroid Prime, including the elevators. It can also be found in Metroid: Zero Mission, notably in Chozodia. It may also be found on the Select Screen in Zero Mission. Chozo writing is also present on the sides of Samus Aran's Gunship in all appearances of the iconic version, such as in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Super Metroid, and Metroid: Other M. It is presumably Chozo language, as similar hieroglyphs are found in Chozodia. The language also appears prior to some in-game text in Other M, and on the Unknown Items Samus Screen data. However, the text in Echoes and Zero Mission differs from the kind found in Prime. One may be Zebesian, while the other may be Tallonian. This may mean that the Chozo have more than one language, or that their language evolved over time.

The only known word in the Chozo language is Metroid, which means "ultimate warrior."

Trivia

  • Samus' Starship in Super Metroid is the first to show a Chozo word or letter with the design of a backwards "C" with a tail hanging out diagonally.
