Cid Newman is an American video game artist who was a co-founder of Retro Studios.
Early career[]
Newman began his career as a junior artist at Iguana Entertainment in 1996, becoming Assistant Art Director within two years. He then started Retro Studios with his Iguana colleague Jeff Spangenberg, which was in the process of being acquired by either Nintendo or Electronic Arts. It was decided to partner with Nintendo since they would gain more independence and access to better intellectual properties.[1]. At Retro, Newman served as a CG Technical Supervisor until August 2001.[2]
Metroid Prime[]
Newman was part of the early development of Metroid Prime. He modeled a face for Samus Aran based on the American supermodel Cindy Crawford, and also performed motion capture for Samus in the pre-2001 version of the game. None of this work survived into the final version of Prime, and even though his design ideas were used, he was not credited for his contributions. Newman first shared his animation on YouTube in June 2015, to little notice. It was later included in a video published by Did You Know Gaming? in late 2023, for which Newman was interviewed.
Subsequent career[]
After leaving Retro Studios, Newman worked as a CG Technical Artist at Nintendo itself, specifically the internal group that developed the Wii and Wii U. Newman left to work with Troublemaker Studios as Technical Director on Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, then at Sony Online Entertainment as an Outsourcing Art Director.
Newman returned to Nintendo in 2005 as a Visual Concepts Manager, co-developing a patent and designing the Nintendo 3DS. He departed from Nintendo again in 2012 and has since worked at Bluepoint Games, Red Fly Studio, Wargaming.net and Gaming Corps. Newman is currently the Technical Art Director at SuperNatural Studios.[2]
