Samus loses consciousness in MP3

Samus falls into a coma after saving Norion.

A coma is a condition where the victim is in a deep state of unconsciousness for a long period of time. Samus Aran has been comatose twice during the Metroid series, in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Metroid Fusion. In both instances, her Power Suit remained active on her body and was operated on by Galactic Federation scientists, creating new Suits.

Samus's coma in Corruption lasted one month, and was the result of Dark Samus attacking her, Gandrayda, Ghor and Rundas while they tried to stop a Leviathan from impacting Norion. Samus used her remaining strength to activate the Defense Cannon and destroy the Leviathan before collapsing and losing consciousness. This may explain why her coma was much longer than those of the other three Bounty Hunters, all of whom spent two weeks in a coma each. During her coma, the Federation implanted a Phazon Enhancement Device into her Power Suit to take advantage of the Phazon her body was now producing, creating the PED Suit. After awakening in MedLab Delta, the Lab Assistant that was tending to Samus explains her new armor and teaches her how to use Hypermode.

After Samus is infected by an X Parasite during a return mission to SR388, she falls into a second coma while piloting her Gunship on return from the planet. She is transported in an Escape Pod to Galactic Federation Headquarters, where Federation surgeons are forced to surgically remove infected parts of her Power Suit. This creates the Fusion Suit. She is eventually saved and brought out of her coma by a Vaccine "Metroid", which transplants Metroid DNA into her body, eradicating the X. As a side effect, Samus is left with a vulnerability to extreme cold, and later develops the ability to siphon energy, much like a Metroid.

Trivia[]

  • Although in-game, Samus's coma in Corruption lasted a month, the Metroid Prime Trilogy art booklet erroneously states that it lasted a week.
  • Samus has also been unconscious, but not comatose, on other occasions. First, she awakens from cryostasis at the start of Corruption. Second, she awakens from a medical procedure at the beginning of Metroid: Other M, and third, she regains consciousness after being attacked by Raven Beak at the start of Metroid Dread.
