The Control Tower is a room on Norion. It appears in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

Description[]

Prime Trilogy Promotional Prime 3 Hunters Norion

Samus and the other Hunters in the Control Tower.

The Control Tower is a building equipped with targeting equipment for aiming the planet's Defense Cannon. The tower's entrance is protected by a powered door crafted out of Jovian steel. The door must have power from Generators A, B and C to open. Samus Aran, Ghor, Rundas and Gandrayda run to the Control Tower after Samus and Rundas have activated the generators, and prepare to fire the Defense Cannon when Dark Samus appears, crashing through the window and shooting down all the hunters but Samus.

Control Tower Norion

Gandrayda fights Dark Samus.

They quickly recover before Dark Samus blasts all of them with Phazon, corrupting their bodies before leaving, seemingly having defeated them. However, Samus excessively forces herself to activate the Defense Cannon, saving the planet from the approaching Leviathan. She then falls into a coma for one month, while the other hunters are only comatose for a few weeks.

For the remainder of the game, the Control Tower is not accessible, due to repairs.

The room itself is relatively unremarkable. There is a large window (destroyed by Dark Samus) overlooking the base, as well as several computer terminals in addition to the one connected to the Defense Cannon.

Development notes[]

The room's internal name is 00_gfplanet_control. The keyword gfplanet indicates Norion, and the prefix 00 indicates that this is a utility room.

The sequence in this room had an extra scene in an earlier version of Corruption. Before Dark Samus left, each hunter was shown writhing in pain on the floor as their bodies were riddled with Phazon.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Control Tower and the Portal Site are the only rooms in the Metroid Prime series with no gameplay at all, as all the events that take place in these rooms happen in scripted scenes.
    • Of the two, the Control Tower appears on Samus's Map, despite her unable to enter the room without cutscene activation.
    • Unlike the Portal Site, it is unknown if the Control Tower can be accessed at all using external hacking or via room editing.
  • It is possible to "re-enter" the Control Tower using Out of Bounds techniques. Curiously, the room's cutscene will play each time this room is reloaded. This will then place Samus back on the Olympus minus the MedLab Delta awakening cutscene.
