The Cosmic Calendar is the calendar by which the galaxy operates, which is referenced multiple times throughout Metroid media and directly mentioned in-game during the introductory cutscenes of Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Metroid: Samus Returns.
The instruction booklets of the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus describe years of the history of the cosmos, predating the first official mentions of the Cosmic Calendar in later media. The Metroid Prime Trilogy manual refers to the calendar as the Cosmo Dating System.
Years of the Cosmic Calendar[]
2000/2003[]
Most media, including the manuals for Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus as well as the Metroid: Volume 1 manga, dates the formation of the Galactic Federation in year 2000 of the history of the cosmos. However, the instruction booklet of Metroid: Zero Mission instead dates this event in year 2003 of the Cosmic Calendar.
20X5[]
The most consistent aspect of the Metroid series timeline is the attack on the Space Research Vessel Marina and the events leading up to Samus Aran's Zero Mission in the Year 20X5.
20X6[]
Metroid Prime: Federation Force is set in Year 20X6 of the Cosmic Calendar. Although one would assume that 20X6 is one year after 20X5, the Nintendo of UK website for the game states that 20X6 is "several years" after the events of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which canonically takes place after the Zero Mission in 20X5; according to the Metroid Prime Trilogy art booklet, Metroid Prime is set three years after the Zero Mission. It is unknown whether this is an error, or if this reveals that a year does not correspond to the length of a Cosmic Calendar year. Alternatively, the 20X6 of Federation Force could represent eleven years since Zero Mission.
20X7[]
According to Samus Aran's narration in a Japanese promotional video for Super Metroid, the Ceres Space Colony's research on the baby and the subsequent Raid on Planet Zebes take place in Cosmic Calendar 20X7.
This implies that the SR-388 incident, which takes place shortly beforehand, may have also taken place in 20X7. However, the SR388 Data File trailer for Metroid: Samus Returns claims that the SR-388 incident takes place "less than a year" after the Zero Mission, which would seemingly contradict the Japanese Super Metroid commercial, the Metroid Prime Trilogy art booklet, and the Federation Force website.
20X9[]
The Announcement Trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond reveals the game's setting in 20X9.
Official data[]
Metroid: Zero Mission instruction booklet[]
"In the year 2003 of the Cosmic Calendar, representatives from the many different planets in the galaxy established a congress called the Galactic Federation, and an age of prosperity began."
"In the year 20X5 of the Cosmic Calendar, a terrible incident occurred."
Metroid Prime: Federation Force introduction[]
"Cosmic Calendar Year 20X6
The destruction of Phazon and the corrupting world, Phaaze, was a monumental victory against the Space Pirates. Despite this, the Galactic Federation also suffered from the loss of Phazon, and the Space Pirate threat remains.
It is clear that the galaxy will never be at peace until the Space Pirates have been wiped out. Consequently, the Galactic Federation initiated Operation Golem, a military campaign aimed at developing tactical superiority over the Space Pirates."
Metroid Prime: Federation Force UK website[]
"Cosmic Calendar Year 20X6 – several years have passed since the heroic actions of legendary bounty hunter Samus Aran on planet Phaaze. The corrupted Aurora Unit 313 was destroyed, Phaaze itself was obliterated, and the creeping threat of Phazon was quelled once and for all. The mission was considered a huge success by the Galactic Federation, yet a re-emerging enemy means the safety of the galaxy remains in a precarious state…"[1]

Cosmic Calendar 20X5
The "Metroids", floating lifeforms discovered on planet SR388, were attempted to be used as a biological weapon by the Space Pirates, utilizing their dangerous power in their plan to conquer the galaxy. Bounty Hunter Samus Aran descended into the Space Pirate stronghold on planet Zebes and succeeded at destroying Mother Brain.
However, it was discovered that deep under the surface of Planet SR388 many Metroids remain.
The Galactic Federation has since ordered the extermination of the Metroids.[2]
Trivia[]
