Etecoons and Dachoras. I've met these intelligent beings before. They seemed to recognize me, as well. How unusual to meet again here. In the past, they've helped me unleash abilities I didn't know I had. But where did they run to? I hope they're safe...

—Samus Aran

The Dachora (Dachola in Super Metroid Nintendo Player's Guide) are a species of ostrich-like animals. Their homeworld is unknown, but it is possibly Zebes.

A Dachora appeared in Super Metroid, in which it taught Samus how to perform a Shinespark, a technique used with the Speed Booster. A nest with an egg could be seen in the background. Later, in the escape sequence in the end of the game, Samus rescued the trapped Dachora and Etecoons from the explosion. Samus had suffered the death of the Baby when it was killed by Mother Brain, and so she helped her friends for helping her. Rescuing the Dachora and Etecoons is an optional part of the escape sequence of Super Metroid. If Samus does so, a tiny white light will be visible leaving the planet along with Samus's gunship during the ending sequence. Yet, although their rescue is optional, the action is considered canon due to the fact that the same Dachora(s) and Etecoons make a reappearance in Metroid Fusion.

The appearance in Metroid Fusion shows the Dachoras (the egg from Super Metroid had hatched) and Etecoons as the sole survivors in the Biologic Space Laboratories research station that haven't been infected by the X Parasites, apart from the Metroids in the Restricted Lab. It is unknown why these creatures were onboard, or why the X did not target them as potential hosts, though it is possible that they were not targeted as they had no useful abilities. After Samus released them, the Dachoras and Etecoons went to Samus's gunship, and they later saved Samus from the space station's explosion after the defeat of the Omega Metroid by piloting her gunship into the room to rescue her.

Trivia

  • The Dachoras are one of the three possible species to possess an ability similar to the Speed Booster. The other two being the Serris and seemingly the Chozo; the latter are said to have created their many items based on their physical capabilities.
  • The Dachora's name in French is "Vertozor". [1]
