! This is a rare creature/object. It may only be scanned in one or few encounters.

A Dark Quad is a Quad robot possessed by the Ing. This Darkling, like its Aether counterpart, is in fact made up of two individual machines: the flying Command Module and the four-legged Main Body. Both of these are scannable in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes as two separate entities. Samus can blast off their heads with the Light Beam, then deactivate the body with the Boost Ball, or disable the body first and attack the head as it floats around on its own.

The scan of the Command Module states that, when a Quad robot is targeted for possession, a dominant Ing assumes ownership of the Command Module and forces a submissive Ing into the Main Body to receive the former's orders. It is unspecified if the two compete with each other in order to determine which parts they will inhabit, or if an individual Ing simply calls upon a lower-ranking member of its species. The Ing Horde used these robots as guards within the Ing Hive.

Dark Quads can only be found within 2 locations throughout Aether. Dark Quads can first appear in the Sanctuary Temple, only during Samus's first passing of the room en route to the Energy Controller should she engage with the normal Quads in the area (if so, these soon can become darkling possessed Mekenobites will then appear in the room upon returning). Dark Quads later appear within the Hive Temple during the Quadraxis fight, where Quadraxis was capable of releasing Dark Quads from an opening underneath its Head Module in order to aid itself during the battle against Samus.

Trivia[]

  • Upon entering the Sanctuary Temple the first time, should Samus shoot one of the two Quads found in the chamber before leaping down and activating the cutscene, the targeted Quad will pursue her as soon as she lands. This prevents one of the Quads from being possessed in the cutscene. As a result, this makes it one of the few, if only, rooms where both a dark and light counterpart of the same enemy can exist at the same time. Neither attack the other, either due to it not being programmed into the game or because the rogue machines are in league with the Ing. Interestingly, should Samus destroy the body of one and the head of the other, the remaining parts will still combine, creating a hybrid of both light and dark entities.
  • Like the Dark Troopers, scanning the lower body of a Dark Quad post-defeat will show that it is no longer possessed.
