The ultimate challenge where any hit results in a Game Over.

—In-game description

MD Dread Mode

Dread Mode is the hardest difficulty mode in Metroid Dread. It was added in a free update released on February 9, 2022, along with the easier Rookie Mode. On Dread Mode, Samus Aran will die in a single hit. However, effects that deal damage over time such as lava, extreme heat, extreme cold, Phantom Cloak after depleting Aeion, and the inside of Kraid's stomach (if sequence breaking is performed) simply do damage as normal. It is unlocked by completing Hard Mode and then starting a new game on the same save file.

Completion of Dread Mode unlocks the Dread Rush mode that was added in an update on April 7, 2022, where Samus faces off against twelve of the game's bosses sequentially with Dread Mode's instant death effect.
