E.M.M.I

Samus encounters her first Zone Door in Artaria.

An E.M.M.I. Zone Door, also known as a Zone Door, is a special type of door in Metroid Dread. These doors serve as the entrance to E.M.M.I. Zones. Unlike the traditional doors in the Metroid series, which must be shot to open, Samus can simply step through them. Only she is capable of entering and exiting through Zone Doors; E.M.M.I. that are patrolling cannot follow her out of a Zone. The doors appear as clusters of voxels, which separate when Samus enters and close as she passes through.

When Samus enters an E.M.M.I. Zone, all doors are marked on her map. However, she can only use them if the E.M.M.I. within that Zone is in either Patrol or Search Mode. If it is in Pursuit Mode and actively chasing Samus, all doors out of the E.M.M.I. Zone remain locked until the robot loses sight of her. When a Zone Door is locked, the voxels are replaced by a red diamond with a line in its center, which creates a solid barrier that prevents Samus from moving through the door. As soon as the E.M.M.I. loses track of Samus, the diamond will revert to voxels, and Samus will be allowed to leave.

At one point, Samus encounters Quiet Robe in front of an E.M.M.I. Zone Door, the latter having saved her from E.M.M.I.-06WB by immobilizing it. She follows him out of the Zone and they have a conversation.

When Artaria freezes over, some E.M.M.I. Zone Doors freeze solid due to ice buildup, preventing Samus from entering them. They can be entered again when she destroys Experiment No. Z-57, restoring thermal power flow to the planet.

Loading screen tip[]

E.M.M.I. ZONE DOORS
E.M.M.I. Zone doors will remain shut for several seconds after you exit one.

All E.M.M.I. Zone doors will lock once an E.M.M.I. begins chasing you. They will open again after you leave the E.M.M.I.'s detection range.

Trivia[]

  • During the Nintendo Treehouse playthrough of Metroid Dread at E3 2021, the Treehouse staff incorrectly referred to it as a pixelated door. Pixels represent the smallest graphical unit on a 2D screen, while voxels are cubes that represent values on a 3D rectangular grid.
  • During the cooldown event, all E.M.M.I. Zone Doors outside Artaria and Cataris are frozen, even though these other areas should be inaccessible without glitches.[1]
