Energy Capsules[1] (also referred to as Balls,[2][3][4] Orbs,[5] and Units[6]) are an item in the Metroid series that replenish the energy of Samus's Power Suit. They are released from defeated enemies, as well as storage containers in the Metroid Prime series, and can be collected by simply touching them, using the tractor beam, or using the Grappling Beam in Super Metroid. In Metroid: Samus Returns, they will automatically gravitate towards Samus.
The appearance of Energy Capsules and the amount of energy restored when collecting them varies per game:
- Metroid: Capsules are white with a flashing red and blue ring around them, and restore 5, 20, or 30 units depending on the enemy.
- Metroid II: Return of Samus: Capsules are white with a black outline, in either a small or large size, restoring 5 and 20 units respectively.
- Super Metroid: Capsules are purple, in either a small or large size, restoring 5 and 20 units respectively.
- Metroid Fusion: No capsules are present. Instead, Yellow X restore 10 units, Red X restore 500, Core-X restore 400, and Blue X, upon the acquisition of the Varia Suit upgrade, restore 30.
- Metroid: Zero Mission: Capsules are purple, in either a small or large size, and restore 5 and 20 units respectively.
- Metroid Prime Hunters: Red Small Energy restores 30 units, blue Medium Energy restores 60, and yellow Large Energy restores 100.
- Multiplayer Mode does not have Small Energy.
- Metroid Prime: Purple Small Energy restores 10 units, red Large Energy restores 20, and yellow Ultra Energy restores 100.
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes: Purple Small Energy restores 10 units, red Medium Energy restores 30, blue Large Energy restores 50, and yellow Ultra Energy restores 100.
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: Purple Small Energy restores 10 units, red Medium Energy restores 25, blue Large Energy restores 50, and yellow Ultra Energy restores 100.
- After obtaining the PED Suit, Phazon Units matching the same colors and amounts appear instead.
- On Phaaze, only Anti-Phazon Units will appear.
- Metroid: Other M: No capsules are present. Instead, there is a technique called Concentration that can be performed when low on energy.
- Metroid: Samus Returns: Capsules are purple, in either a small or large size, restoring 10 and 25 units respectively.
- Metroid Dread: Capsules are light purple swirls of energy, restoring 10 units of energy.
Generally, capsules that restore more energy are more likely to be released when Samus's energy is lower.

Trivia
- In the Super Metroid comic, during a Space Pirate ambush, Armstrong Houston throws Samus an Energy Capsule to refill her health. He explained that he gave it to her because it "wouldn't have done any good for him", indicating his armor cannot repair damage with energy. In the manga, the strips She Finds a Small O and She Finds a Big O feature Samus killing a Geemer, with an Energy Capsule being left behind. Samus admires its roundness before trying to touch it, but it disappears.
