Energy Core (エネルギーコア)[1], also known as General Puzzle[2], is a theme from Metroid Prime. It is an upbeat ambient track with a bass line, some techno beats, light percussion, and steam effects.
Energy Core plays in rooms where Samus Aran must solve a puzzle. These include lowering the toxic water in the titular Energy Core, powering the astronomical holographic projector in the Observatory, obtaining the Energy Tank in Magmoor Workstation, navigating the maze in the Central Dynamo, and navigating the Spider Ball Tracks in the Geothermal Core. The theme stops playing after the puzzle has been completed.
A unique variant of the Energy Core theme, titled Phendrana Secrets,[3] is heard when solving the puzzle in the Ruined Courtyard. This version performs the melody with some of the high-pitched instruments associated with various other themes in Phendrana Drifts, evoking the frozen and icy atmosphere. Although it is one of the few tracks not included on the Metroid Prime & Fusion Original Soundtracks album, it is featured in the Soundtrack Gallery of Metroid Prime Remastered.
Neither version of Energy Core is included on the Nintendo Music app.
In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, a new theme can be heard when solving puzzles. It does not share many similarities with Energy Core in its composition, so it is unconfirmed whether it was intended as a remix. However, it does share some similar instruments, including the "heartbeat" bass line, some electronic sounds, and the steam effects, enforcing a relationship between the two games' respective puzzle themes.
