Escue[1] is a boss fought in Metroid Dread. It is an especially powerful Quetzoa infected by an X Parasite, and is fought in Ferenia on ZDR.

Battle[]

In the tower just before Escue's arena, it can be seen hovering around Ferenia with two other Quetzoas.

When Samus enters the room, Escue flies past the windows in the background twice before entering the room and commencing the battle. It attacks by firing a large ball of black energy at Samus, which dissipates if it impacts a wall; if it hits the floor, however, it momentarily seizes up before bursting, sending an electrical shock across the floor. Escue can also ram into Samus or fire small black projectiles that try to home in on her.

Much like Quetshockers, Escue's body is usually enveloped in electricity, rendering it mostly invincible, except for the Screw Attack; however, it temporarily loses its electrical field after using its ram attack. This provides Samus an opening to fire Ice Missiles or Charge Beam shots at Escue before it recharges itself. 18 Ice Missiles will kill Escue in its natural form.

After dealing enough damage, Escue reverts to its Core-X form, which flies around the room and tries to ram into Samus. Once it has been hit five times, the shell breaks and the X can be absorbed. Doing so grants Samus the Storm Missile ability. The shrapnel beam fired by Escue may represent it using the upgrade.

Escue can also be damaged with a Shinespark, if Samus runs into the room and prepares one.[2] This will not kill it, but it will deal significant damage.

The Escue battle can be delayed by obtaining the Space Jump early, but the boss must still be killed at some point to get past a Storm Missile Box in Ferenia and reach E.M.M.I.-06WB's Central Unit. If the Screw Attack is acquired beforehand via this or other broken sequences, it can be used to negate Escue's electrical attacks and directly deal damage to Escue even when its electrical field is active.

Trivia[]

  • Escue is referred to as Superquetzoa-X in Metroid Dread's internal files. Abbreviated as "SQ", this is the likely origin of the creature's name.
