The Evir (エビア Ebia ) is an enemy in Super Metroid in Maridia. It is possible that they are the offspring of Draygon or separate members of the same species.
Description[]
Super Metroid[]
Evirs are normally colored grayish. They slowly sink into quicksand in various Maridian chambers, but can be stopped from doing so when frozen by Samus with the Ice Beam, and killed if shot with a non-Ice Beam or the Plasma Beam combined with the Ice Beam. They are able to eject projectiles from their tails in a straight line toward Samus, even when hidden under the sand.
A unique, seemingly docile group of Evirs also appear in Draygon's chamber prior to Samus' battle with Draygon. After the creature's death, they drag the remaining corpse beneath the sand. These Evirs are colored green, and possess only four legs rather than six as seen in the greyish variants. These may be caretakers/labor workers and, based on their colors, seem to be more closely related to Draygon than the hostile Evirs.
Metroid Fusion[]
Several Evirs were captured and brought aboard the Biologic Space Laboratories research station prior to the events of Metroid Fusion, where they were later infected and/or mimicked by the X Parasites. These specimens reside in the seabed area of Sector 4 (AQA), and have a slightly different appearance from their normal variants, with thicker plating on their heads, and the overall shell now an orange-yellow color. Their tails are now grey colored and cylindrical, with the projectiles they fire from now orbiting around them in steadily increasing circles until they hit Samus or are shot. These changes are likely the results of the X modifying the DNA of their victims.
They will take damage from a fully charged Plasma Beam shot. They can, however, be defeated in a single charged shot if Samus aims at point-blank range in the yellow stomach area. They can be frozen when hit directly in the stomach with an Ice Missile or when touched by a Diffusion Missile's shockwave.

Development notes[]
The Evirs' "dance" before Samus faces Draygon is actually tracing the English letters of "Keiko Love", referencing a girl named Keiko that Yasuhiko Fujii was dating at the time. Fujii secretly programmed the dance, which was not in the design documents, while his coworkers were sleeping.[1]
In the internal data of Super Metroid, the Evir is referred to as Ebi, a romanization of the Japanese word for shrimp (エビ ), which also serves as the basis of their Japanese name. Similarly, Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide describes an Evir as looking "like a giant shrimp".[2] X-infected Evirs have a noticeable red coloration, further resembling shrimp.
Trivia[]
- Since the Evirs' supposed leader, Draygon, is believed to be an important member of the Space Pirate legions, these aquatic creatures may be considered as Pirates or, at the minimum, under their servitude.
- The tail from the Metroid Fusion variant of Evir resembles a pipe.
