"Fake Ridley" is an unused enemy in the original Metroid for the NES/Famicom Disk System.
Description[]
Similar to Mini-Kraid, it uses Ridley's attacks and dies in a single hit from a Missile or Screw Attack. It has a purple, orange, and magenta palette as opposed to the real Ridley's mauve, green and dark purple palette.
Fake Ridley can be found in the game's code and is fully functional as an enemy.
Trivia[]
- The idea of a fake Ridley was ultimately implemented several times throughout the Metroid series.
- Chronologically, the first canonical use of an imposter was his clone in Metroid: Other M, followed by an X Parasite mimicking his likeness in Metroid Fusion.
- In the Japanese version of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the Ridley that Samus encounters several times within the game is stated to be a clone of the authentic one last seen on Tallon IV. It is unknown if this information is canon, since it is not present in the original English version.
- Mecha Ridley from Metroid: Zero Mission can be seen as a fake variant of Ridley.
- In other media such as the two Samus & Joey manga, there is a character called Greed that Samus initially confuses with Ridley but the lookalike explains that their identical appearance is due to both belonging to the same race. Similarly, a story in the Nintendo Comics System presents Judge Racklas who is indistinguishable from Ridley and the latter uses this to his advantage.
- In Nintendo Land, players can battle Ridley who is depicted as an animatronic, with later levels featuring Ice Ridley instead. Some players may initially think the latter is merely the former upgraded with ice attributes, until Mission 28 where both versions of Ridley show up as separate animatronics.
