Fake tank[1], also known as a false tank[2], is an enemy in Metroid Fusion.

Description

Fake tanks have only been observed aboard the Biologic Space Laboratories research station. Samus Aran can encounter a fake Missile Tank[3] in Sector 6 (NOC), as well as a false Energy Tank[4] in Sector 5 (ARC).

When Samus first enters the room, the creature looks like a normal Missile Tank or Energy Tank. In this state, it is impervious to damage. However, once she gets close to it, eyes and bat-like wings appear from the item. The creature will begin to fly up for a time, then fly away. If Samus hits it with Missiles or a Super Missile, it will be destroyed and transform into an X Parasite.

Fake tanks are ordinary X Parasites; collecting a defeated specimen will not increase Samus's maximum energy or missile count. They're also unaffected by the Screw Attack while disguised, similar to the X in their pure forms. However, in both encounters with fake tanks, Samus can bomb the wall in front of her to reveal a real Missile Tank (Sector 6) or Energy Tank (Sector 5).

The fake tank provides another example, along with the SA-X and other creatures, of an X Parasite apparently mimicking an inorganic, mechanical object. When agitated, the tank reveals itself to be at least partially organic in nature, lending strong support to the theory that X Parasites do indeed create these seemingly metallic components out of organic material.

Trivia

  • In Japanese media, the fake tank is known as Mimic (ミミック?).[5]
    • At least one Japanese guidebook misidentifies the fake tank as a Skree, despite the two enemies bearing no semblance to one another.[6] Coincidentally, Skrees were planned to appear in Fusion but were cut from the final product.
  • Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide refers to the fake tank as an "imposter"[7] and "decoy"[8].
