Stone Statues

The activated Stone Statues in Metroid

The Stone Statues (石像?)[1][2], also known as the Mini-Boss statues[3], are two statues that appear in the original Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission. They are used to guard Tourian and depict the likenesses of Kraid and Ridley, two of the game's bosses.

In Super Metroid, these are replaced by the Golden Statues.

Description[]

Metroid[]

The statues are situated on a ledge above a pool of acid, preventing Samus from easily accessing Tourian. To reach the Blue Door leading to Tourian's elevator, Samus must defeat the two minibosses and then shoot the flashing statues. They will rise, and a bridge of Fake Blocks will form.

There is another way to get to Tourian without having to kill Kraid and Ridley. Samus must lure a Reo from the previous room inside, and then freeze it when it flies into the acid. She can then lay a Bomb to jump off of it and onto the other ledge.

Silence plays in the room containing the Stone Statues and the next one connecting to Tourian.

While Samus only has to shoot the statues with her beam, the non-canonical game book Metroid: Zebes Invasion Order depicts her inserting Key Stones into the statues in order to activate them.

Metroid: Zero Mission[]

Stone Statues ZM

The Stone Statues with their mouths closed

In Metroid: Zero Mission, the Stone Statues are redesigned as the two-headed statue[4], also known as the Kraid and Ridley busts[5], which resemble Kraid's and Ridley's heads. These heads are situated on a rock floor, preventing Samus from repeating the Sequence Break technique in Metroid. When either Kraid or Ridley is defeated, their respective statue's eyes start to glow, and the statue is marked with a flame on the map. When Samus approaches the activated statues, their heads "open" their mouths, allowing Samus to walk through.

Unlike the original game, Silence does not play here; it is replaced by an entirely new theme.
