Bomb Slot

Samus utilizing a Bomb Slot device on Aether.

A Bomb Slot (called Morph Ball Slot in Metroid Prime and Bomb Activation Device in Metroid Prime Official Perfect Guide) is a spherical device that is used to fulfill certain goals found in the Metroid Prime trilogy. Bomb Slots can be used to activate a variety of machinery when a power surge is sent through them. This "surge" can only be created by a Morph Ball Bomb.

Usage and appearances[]

Usually, the Bomb Slot can be activated immediately by detonating a Bomb, but some require a new power supply to make them functional.

Activated Bomb Slots usually cause something to happen that allows Samus to progress further in her exploration, such as opening gates, powering devices and activating a puzzle sequence. Sometimes Bomb Slots are used for offensive purposes - during the battle with Flaahgra in Metroid Prime, Samus must roll through narrow channels and detonate a bomb in a slot to damage the plant's vulnerable base after stunning it.

In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, the Spider Ball Guardian can only be defeated by using Bomb Slots to change the direction of its movement, so it crashes into the energy blocks. Another boss in Echoes, the Power Bomb Guardian must also be destroyed using Bomb Slots, which channel electrical energy towards the creature and weaken the supports of the ceiling above it. Quadraxis' final form can only be damaged when Samus rolls up into a Morph Ball and boosts onto the exposed magnetic surface of the head. Samus then has to roll into one of the two Bomb Slots on the head and detonate a Bomb to blow it up.

Diggernaut drilling arm core attacked by Samus

Samus using the Bomb Slot inside the Diggernaut's right arm in Metroid: Samus Returns.

In Metroid: Samus Returns, the Diggernaut boss has Bomb Slots inside both of its drilling arms, which can be accessed via Spider Ball Tracks lined on the arms. When a Bomb is detonated in these slots, it sends a surge of electricity into the Diggernaut that damages its body and the arm. Bombing the first and second arms lead into the second and third phase of the battle.

Morph Ball launchers in some other games of the Metroid series are likewise activated with Bombs.
