Samus Aran's Starship,[1][2] also referred to as the Gunship[3] or Samus' Gunship,[4] is a new, Galactic Federation-made gunship introduced in Metroid Fusion, after the destruction of Samus's original iconic Gunship. She is given the new ship ahead of her mission aboard the Biologic Space Laboratories research station and continues using it on her mission to ZDR.

Background[]

In the opening sequence of Fusion, Samus's iconic Gunship crashes into an asteroid belt after she loses consciousness due to an X Parasite infection. After she escapes and recovers from the X thanks to a Metroid vaccine, she is given a new Starship by the Galactic Federation, on the condition that Samus follow the orders of the computerized CO. Samus lands her Starship in the Docking Bays of the station's Main Deck, where it remains for the rest of the game. She can return to it to save and replenish her energy and ammunition, as with her previous Gunship, and she can also repeat the CO's briefings.

During her mission, Samus encounters the Dachoras and Etecoons that had assisted her during her last mission on Zebes. Adam later asks Samus to return to the Starship, where he informs her that the creatures have boarded the ship. He explains that after he verified that the creatures were not X hosts, he gave them a berth and decided to keep them safe.

At the end of the game, Samus sets off the station's propulsion system. She races back to the Docking Bays only to find her Starship missing and an Omega Metroid present. Shortly after defeating the creature, the ship returns and she boards it, escaping the station shortly before it collides with SR388.

The Gunship landing in Hanubia

Samus continues to use the Gunship in Metroid Dread, landing in Hanubia on ZDR with it. Samus's entire mission in Dread consists of returning to her Gunship; it is not possible to visit the ship in gameplay. It can be seen on her World Map.

The game ends when Samus reaches the Gunship during the final escape sequence, although she was ultimately stopped from activating it by Adam because, in her current destabilized state, it would have ran the risk of draining the ship of all of its power and stranding her on the doomed planet. She finds Quiet Robe, revived by the X Parasite, aboard the ship and absorbs the X to stabilize her fractured DNA, and then flies the ship off of ZDR before the planet explodes.

Appearance and schematics[]

Starship Fusion Background

The interior of the ship can be seen during briefings on-board, behind the dialogue box and window.

Though there are few specifics available on the new ship, there are several noticeable external differences. The new ship is colored purple with a blue-toned, almost honeycomb-like glass window, as well as wings with tips that split in half. When landing, these wingtips extend downwards as landing gear instead of the ship landing on its belly or hovering above the ground. The ship takes on a more aerodynamic, birdlike look.

The most important feature of the new ship is an on-board computer which Samus nicknames Adam after her late Commanding Officer, Adam Malkovich. The computer takes the role of her new CO, issuing her commands through various Navigation Rooms on the BSL station. By the end of the game, Adam (the computer) has begun to speak to her like Adam Malkovich, whose personality, Samus learns, had been uploaded to a computer before his death.

The ship escapes the destruction of SR388.

Unlike many of Samus's Gunships, Samus does not enter this Starship through a hatch on top; instead, she stands underneath it and a beam automatically comes down and pulls her in. This is shared with the Gunship Samus uses in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and her original Gunship in Metroid: Other M, all of which use a lowering hatch. The Starship's official artwork reveals that the ship's wings are shaped more like a fighter jet's in that they jut backward instead of forwards, as with the wings of Samus's Corruption Gunship.

According to Samus in the endgame of Fusion, the Starship lacked an autopilot feature, which left her bewildered as to how the ship could have escaped the Omega Metroid on its own. She briefly wonders if it is possible that Adam had somehow guided the ship from beyond the grave, before the computerized Adam reveals that the Etecoons and Dachoras had piloted the vessel.

Development notes[]

In a prototype version of Metroid Fusion, the background interior for the Starship is vastly different than the final one used. It appears to be more spacious looking, with the onboard central terminal having an alternate shape. The front window is more wide and there appear to be buttons off to the side walls. Interestingly enough, the prototype design bears a slight resemblance to the interior of the Gunship seen in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and this design may have been used for the latter in development.

In the E3 2002 trailer of Metroid Fusion, the text "STAR SHIP" is displayed when Samus exits the Starship.[5]
