SM Energy Station

An Energy Charge in Super Metroid.

Energy Charges,[1] also known as Energy Terminals[2] and Energy Recharge Stations,[3][4] are stations that serve as a location to recharge Samus Aran's Energy.

Description[]

Energy Charges are first encountered in Super Metroid. The devices are silver, domed machines with two sockets for Samus's Arm Cannon, and are always found within a blue-colored room. These stations seem to be designed specifically for the Chozo Power Suit technology by the recent Chozo inhabitants of the planet. They are present in every area of Zebes, with the exception of the Wrecked Ship.

The energy charge unit was preceded by the Big Energy Ball in Metroid II: Return of Samus. This item was unlimited in its dispensable energy, and was not connected to any sort of networking power system. The device was only observed on Zebes in all areas (with the exception of the Wrecked Ship), on Samus's second mission to the planet. Later games combined the functions of other types of stations to incorporate energy recharging, such as in the Prime series and Metroid: Zero Mission, where Save Stations were used to recharge energy. The Energy Charge of Super Metroid seems to contain a Big Energy Ball.

Samus Returns Energy Station

In Metroid: Samus Returns, Energy Recharge Stations are present on SR388. They are colored purple, in contrast with the red Ammo Recharge Stations. They are marked on Samus's map whenever she encounters one. Scan Pulse can also reveal their location when their map square is revealed, making it easier for Samus to find them. To use them, Samus must stand on a pressure plate in front of them for a moment, and then she will automatically use it.

Energy Recharge Stations return in Metroid Dread. They now appear as Chozo statuary marked with glowing purple lines. They function the same way as in Samus Returns. The game also features Total Recharge Stations, which combine the functions of Energy Recharge Stations and Ammo Recharge Stations.

Trivia[]

  • One of the manga strips in the Super Metroid manga, titled "Regular Recharge", depicts Samus nearly drowning in water, and then getting electrocuted by an Energy Charge (that she mistook for an Energy Tank).
  • In Super Metroid, if Samus sticks her Arm Cannon into the charger, immediately pauses the game, then unpauses, she will be able to remove her cannon and leave the room. The message stating that the Energy recharge has been completed will appear as Samus is about to leave. This is a tactic often used by speedrunners.
