Griptian[1] (グリプト星人 Gript)[2] is an armadillo-like species featured in Metroid: Other M.
Description[]
The Griptian is an experimental test subject that was turned into a ferocious monster.[3] They were presumably created for the ringleaders as bioweapons aboard the BOTTLE SHIP, where they are seen in the Biosphere. The Griptian has an armored back, a tail and giant claws. It is capable of rolling into a ball in order to ram Samus, slashing with its claws, pouncing her to the ground and beating her with its fists, or burrowing underground. Due to its armadillo-like attributes, it also resembles an Arachnus in appearance and attack.

When a Griptian is rolling, it can easily be dislodged with a Bomb or a Charge Beam shot, but it will not take any damage from the blow. Samus can easily defeat Griptians by shooting them with a Missile or performing an Overblast to knock it over. From there it can be finished with a Lethal Strike - alternatively, Lethal Strikes can be performed with ease if it misses its pounce attack and instead gets its claws stuck in the ground. When an Overblast is attempted but Samus fails to fire on time, the Griptian will throw her off but no damage is incurred.
A single Griptian can be found ensnared in Kihunter webbing in the underground cavern, directly outside their nest in the Biological Experiment Floor.
The Mighty Griptian is a stronger variant of Griptian, which eventually replaces the normal version later in the game.

Watch for the trail on the ground to indicate where the Griptians are burrowing, and ambush them. Use Normal and Super Missiles to destroy these bullies as they try to knock you over."

- Art of a Griptian is featured on one side of a Metroid: Other M poster in Nintendo Power's September 2010 issue.[4] The same art is also included in the Metroid: Other M Art Folio.
- The Griptian's Japanese name includes the kanji 星人, which is shared with Zebesian, Kyratian, and Ghalmanian. Similarly, their English names end with the -ian suffix. Since this name indicates that the Zebesian is an inhabitant of Zebes, this may imply that Griptian are native to a (currently-unseen) planet named Gript (グリプト).
