The Grizby is a species found in the Magmoor Caverns in Metroid Prime.

Description[]

The Grizby is a sub-volcanic creature with a spherical carapace fused together by superheated air. It has two red eyes near the anterior portion of its shell. Grizbys live in extreme heat thanks to their thermophilic nature, and their protective carapaces can endure attacks from natural predators. Relying largely on instinct, Grizbys largely spend their time scavenging for sub-volcanic carrion.[1]

Samus Aran encounters Grizbys in two rooms in the Magmoor Caverns of Tallon IV: Burning Trail and Lake Tunnel. They do not attack her and instead continue focusing on scavenging for dead animals. Since their shells are so strong, they can only be destroyed by Missiles, Super Missiles or Power Bombs.

Official website[]

"Grizbys thrive in extremely hard temperatures. Their protective carapaces are strong enough to withstand even the most violent attacks of their natural enemies. Grizbys spend their waking hours scavenging for carrion in sub-volcanic environments.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

Grizby
"Grizbies are small armored creatures that roam the rocks around Magmoor Caverns. They aren't aggressive creatures and like to patrol in set patterns. They are indestructible to everything but missiles."

Recommended Weapon: Missile Launcher
"Grizbies are found exclusively in the harsh environment of Magmoor Caverns. The intense heat of their home has fused their carapace into a barrier that is invulnerable to all but the concussive effects of the Missile Launcher. Grizbies aren't aggressive and stick to their set scavenging patterns. They damage they cause isn't much, but they can push you off platforms into the more lethal lava. A single missile fired from a distance is enough to rid you of these creatures."

Metroid Prime: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide[]

GRIZBY
"The Grizby is a slow, stupid creature that poses little threat to a warrior such as Samus. It moves in a predictable pattern across rock outcroppings, and in many cases can be avoided altogether. If you need to eliminate one, use a Missile--no other weapon can penetrate the creature's hard shell."

COMBAT TIPS
"The Grizby requires the use of at least a Missile to destroy it. The standard Charge Beam will not effectively destroy one, therefore it's best to target them from afar with a Missile (one shot takes out the Grizby)."

Metroid Prime: Official Perfect Guide[]

GRIZBY
"Grizbies are pretty weak in terms of the damage they'll delve out, but it does take a Missile to destroy them."

Trivia[]

  • The name Grizby is a phonetic spoonerism of Brizgee. Other than the name, though, the only similarity between these two creatures is the required use of a missile to kill them. It is also similar to the later Muzby from Metroid Dread, although there are otherwise few notable similarities between the two species.
  • The plural form of "Grizby" is "Grizbys" on the official Metroid Prime website or "Grizbies" in Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide.
  • Metroid Prime Pinball features a strain of Parasite that more closely resembles a Grizby.
  • Grizbys has varying heat signatures when using the Thermal Visor. It is somewhat difficult to detect a proper heat signature from a Grizby, given how they are always located near pits of lava. In Burning Trail, the heat signature adjusts depending on Samus's distance from the lava pool. In Lake Tunnel, the Grizbys' heat signature is extremely bright (though this may also be contributed to the flame jets directly above the Grizbys). It is also possible that the Grizbys in Lake Tunnel have a higher heat signature due to being inside an ultra-heated room.
  • Strangely, the Grizbys in Lake Tunnel make a different death sound than the Grizby in Burning Trail.
