For other beams of the same name, see Hyper Beam (Disambiguation).

The Hyper Beam is an incredibly powerful weapon acquired by Samus Aran near the end of Metroid Dread. After fully awakening her Metroid DNA while fighting Raven Beak, Samus's Gravity Suit turns into the Metroid Suit and all of her Arm Cannon abilities are combined to form this massive laser.

Properties[]

The Hyper Beam is a wide, red pink laser that penetrates through all terrain, vaporizes enemies and destroys all types of blocks including Bomb Blocks, Boost Blocks, Screw Attack Blocks, Pit Blocks, and Power Bomb Blocks. It is notably the only weapon capable of killing X Parasites outright in their base forms. She uses it twice against Raven Beak X to destroy him, and all throughout the final escape sequence against enemies and obstacles, including a Hyper Beam Door blocking access to the Landing Site. Samus charges the weapon in order to fire it for the very first time, but this is seemingly a one-time requirement; every subsequent use of the Hyper Beam by holding down the attack button immediately unleashes the massive, continuous laser. The Hyper Beam produces a significant amount of heat, as evidenced by the steam that is exhausted by continuous fire.[1]

As the Metroid Suit was neutralized when Samus absorbed the X Parasite carrying Quiet Robe's DNA, it is reasonable to assume she lost the Hyper Beam as well.

Trivia[]

  • Raven Beak's Arm Cannon can seemingly fire the same Hyper Beam: throughout his boss battle (such as during Grab Sequences), he can fire a massive beam that is identical in appearance to the one she gains soon after. While fans commonly presume that his weapon was stolen by Samus when she siphoned his life energy much like the Baby Metroid did with Mother Brain's Laser Brain Attack in Super Metroid, the Samus Screen instead ascribes the Hyper Beam's source to Samus combining all her Arm Cannon abilities.
    • Coincidentally, the identically-named Hyper Beam from Super Metroid is brought up in an official source without any mention of its correlations with the Laser Brain Attack.
    • If Raven Beak's weapon is indeed the same Hyper Beam used by Samus later on, it may have aided in his survival against the X Parasites all this time on ZDR up to his final battle against her.
  • By save editing, it is seen that the Hyper Beam disables the use of Missiles and their upgrades, the Grapple Beam, and the Omega Cannon. Consequently, the game would be rendered unbeatable; certain doors were not programmed by the game's developers to open with the weapon, and although the Hyper Beam can melt an E.M.M.I.'s faceplate, it is not coded to defeat the E.M.M.I. itself.
  • The usage of the Hyper Beam when confronting Raven Beak X was similar to the usage of the Omega Cannon on the E.M.M.I., with the difference that Samus automatically aims at Raven Beak X while aiming with the Omega Cannon must be done manually.
  • Internal files for the Hyper Beam in Metroid Dread refer to it as "zerolaser", likely a placeholder name inspired by the similar Zero Laser in the Super Smash Bros. series.[2]
  • This version of Hyper Beam has strong parallels to the Phazon Beam of Metroid Prime: aside from both being final upgrades which become usable during the respective final boss, both are also fired as continuous beams by holding down the fire button rather than being separate shots.
