An Iceflea[1] is a creature found on ZDR in Metroid Dread.
Description[]
The Iceflea mostly appears in the frozen sections of Artaria (which is most of the area after the region is frozen over by Experiment No. Z-57) and Ferenia, but some X Parasites in other regions can transform into it if given the opportunity. It is a flying batlike creature similar to Dropters and Sharpaws, but with an additional feature: ice crystals that form on its back. Its skin is black on its dorsal side and bright yellow underneath, although its whole body appears with a bright greenish tint when its ice is present.
Icefleas fly in the air and dive towards Samus Aran to attack her, much like Dropters. However, when defeated with Missiles or Charge Beam shots, they freeze in midair and shake violently, before releasing an explosion of ice that can freeze Samus for several seconds, dealing major damage. This can be avoided by either killing the Iceflea before it can burst, killing it with a Melee Counter or Screw Attack, or hiding behind a platform or wall. Using the Melee Counter on an Iceflea will also break the ice crystals off.
No Icefleas are encountered before the X Parasites are released from Elun. Therefore, it is unknown whether Icefleas are a naturally-occurring species that may be related to Dropters and/or Sharpaws, or if they were created by the X altering the DNA of their host species. It may be worth noting that an X will sometimes combine with a Dropter to form an Iceflea.
Trivia[]
- The Iceflea's internal name is evocative of another Metroid enemy, the Fireflea. However, the two species otherwise do not resemble one another in appearance or behavior.
