Iono Feria (イオノ フェリア), alternatively translated as Ion-Faeria and Iona Faria, are a large flying creature found on Zebes. They appear only in Volume 1 of the Magazine Z manga.
Description[]
Iono Feria are nearly the size of an adult human. They resemble butterflies and are referred to as such by Samus Aran, though their bodies somewhat resemble small bears.
They feed on the nectar of flowering plants found on Zebes and are extremely gentle. Their flight is powered by absorbed moisture molecules, though it is possible that any form of liquid water may suffice, as well as the nectar of flowers may work as well. Old Bird explains that, "It absorbs moisture, ionizes it, and uses the energy to fly."
They are possibly semi-sentient, as they are able to use weapons, though this may be the result of the corrupting effects of the toxins from the Badger Clovers that the Space Pirates planted.
History[]
Samus Aran first encounters an Iono Feria when it drinks from her water container, accidentally scaring Pyonchi.
A group of them become corrupted due to the nectar of an alien flower, known as Badger Clovers. This causes the Iono Feria to attack the Chozo and Samus. After retrieving guns from deceased Space Pirates, they have to be destroyed along with the flowers. After the flowers are incinerated, Samus is able to destroy their guns without harming the Iono Feria. However, they are quickly exterminated by a group of Work Robots as part of the "cleansing" while under the command of Mother Brain.
If any Iono Feria survive, it is possible they may have been ultimately driven to extinction by the Space Pirates, the introduction of Flesh-Eating Bacteria with the arrival of Zoomers, or with the destruction of Zebes.
Trivia[]
- As Zebesian wildlife capable of using weapons, the Iono Feria parallel the non-canonical instances of Rios and Zoomer wielding weapons in the early Nintendo Comics System story Deceit Du Jour.
