"Kraid's room" is a room in Cataris on ZDR. It is the location where Kraid was held captive by the Mawkin tribe and where Samus Aran battles him in Metroid Dread.
Description[]
Kraid's room is located on the lower-left corner of Cataris and entered from above via a Morph Ball tunnel. One of the largest open rooms in the area, it mainly consists of metal architecture around a wide (though relatively shallow) lava pool. Embers float off the surface of the lava indefinitely. Despite there being a faintly visible hole in the ceiling from Samus' Morph Ball, this is a one-way drop. Also, the entrance from the upper side becomes blocked off by rubble after Samus has fallen down. Kraid is held captive in the lava by restraints bound to the wall behind him; there is a large opening under this wall that allows access to the next room on the right. To the left (in front of Kraid) is a platform for visitors that keeps them safe from the lava below. After Kraid's death, what appear to be bones or jagged rocks can be found in the lava.
The walls in this room appear rockier and less artificial in the second image of the Chozo Archives, which depicts Mawkin Chozo Soldiers imprisoning Kraid. They may have been refurbished after the time of the image.
Role[]
As depicted in the second image in the Chozo Archives, this room is where the Mawkin tribe imprisoned Kraid or another member of his species after capturing him through unknown means. This event must have happened before almost all Mawkin succumbed to the X Parasite outbreak on ZDR, because the Chozo in the shot have red eyes as opposed to the white eyes of those that have been infected or copied by the X.
After entering this room via a Morph Ball tunnel, Samus Aran lands on the platform to the left and does battle with Kraid. After being sufficiently enraged and breaking free from the restraints for his left arm, he smashes Samus's platform, destroying it and forcing Samus to drop down to the edge of the lava below. This restricts Samus's offensive options to merely attacking his infected stomach hole (as opposed to his more vulnerable head), but it also reveals two mechanisms that help Samus attack Kraid: a blue magnetic strip on a rail along the wall, and a Morph Ball launcher on ground level. After Samus has damaged Kraid's stomach hole enough, the tremor created by Kraid's attacks will cause the magnetic strip to come down, allowing her to grab onto it, ride it upward, and continue attacking his head. Alternatively, she can jump on a trio of spikes fired from Kraid's stomach to reach the magnetic strip without needing to wait for it to come down. If she has acquired Bombs through sequence breaking before the battle, she can use the Morph Ball launcher to simply enter his stomach and bomb it from inside, trivializing the second phase of the battle altogether.
Once Kraid has taken sufficient damage (regardless of the method used to defeat him), Samus will run up his body and jump onto the wire for the restraint around his right arm. In response, Kraid turns around and inadvertently breaks it in an attempt to kill her. With no more restraints holding him up, he starts sinking into the lava. Before sinking to his death, he fires one last spike that Samus promptly side-steps. The spike impacts the wall, embedded into it and causing it to crack. Once Kraid is dead, Samus uses this spike as a platform to proceed to the Chozo Statue holding the Diffusion Beam.
Kraid's last spike remains after Samus leaves the room, but it vanishes after the X Parasites are released from Elun. This implies that the X assimilated Kraid's DNA from the spike, which a purple X later amalgamated into Raven Beak X. Once the Gravity Suit is acquired, a tunnel leading into a room with a Power Bomb Tank can be accessed in the lava.
Connecting rooms[]
- "Kraid's room access" (via one-way drop)
- "Diffusion chamber" (via tunnels, including one in lava)
Inhabitants[]
Later visits[]
When entered after Elun, two X will automatically enter the room and form into one of the Plies and the Vulkran; the other Ply has already animated.
