Laser Barrier

Laser Barrier system seen at Phazon Site.

A Laser Barrier (as named internally) is a security system used by the Space Pirates on Aether during the events of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. In many places where Space Pirate activity is or was present, laser beams are emitted from one area to another, obstructing progress. In most cases, eliminating the Pirates controlling the system will cause it to dispel. Other times, scanning linked modules will disable the system in place. Many of these lasers produced are quite powerful, able to injure Samus if contact is made. They also repel her from passing through them.

Appearances[]

The Laser Barrier system first appears in the Central Mining Station, in both the Bonus Disc and final versions of Echoes. When Samus enters the center of the room, Pirate Trooper activity spots her and rushes in, activating Laser Barriers that cover the ground floor doors, and another pair of Laser Barriers between Space Pirate starship wreckage. This essentially boxes in Samus during the this battle. When the Pirate troops are eliminated, the Laser Barriers between the wreckage dispel, allowing Samus to maneuver further around the room. A second wave of Pirate Troopers soon teleport in to assault the Bounty Hunter, and after their elimination, two Pirates man "Vigilance" Class Turrets against her. Once these turrets are destroyed, all Laser Barriers are deactivated.

This system also appears in the Phazon Site of the Dark Agon Wastes. In this room, the system is indirectly named via Scanning. Four laser beams are emitted over a door, and three red nodes are positioned above its doorway. Samus is required to navigate the room, exposed to the atmosphere of Dark Aether, to scan three Interface Modules linked to the security system that contain access codes necessary to disabling the system. Each module is in a corner of the room. Samus must scan the locks at close-range; otherwise, local interference will block her Scan Visor. When a module is scanned, a node will turn green, signifying a part of the system has been unlocked. After all Modules have been scanned, the lasers will disappear, allowing Samus to continue to the Watering Hole. Because of this system in place, Samus cannot enter the Phazon Site from the Watering Hole via Sequence Breaking.

A third set of Laser Barriers is encountered within the Torvus Temple, placed around the Elevator to the Torvus Energy Controller. This elevator also houses the Super Missile. The elevator itself is being jammed by local Pirate forces and all must be eliminated in order to both remove the Laser Barrier system and restore function to the elevator. This set of Lasers do not harm Samus and act as a slope when jumped on. Curiously, its size also blocks the elevator door leading to the Hydrodynamo Station.

A fourth set is encountered also within the Torvus Bog, within the Torvus Grove. On her way to a Portal into Dark Torvus Bog, when Samus reaches the door leading to Meditation Vista, her progress is halted by an activated Laser Barrier system in place. Soon after activation, a pair of Pirate Commandos appear, reporting the situation and dashing their way into the fray of battle. Samus is able to eliminate these two scouts, which causes the Laser Barrier to dispel. It is never reactivated.
