Artaria entrance[]

Main article: Artaria entrance
Metroid Dread Report Vol

The "Artaria entrance" is the first room in Artaria, and by extension, Metroid Dread. This room is set within a deep cave, but has had a Chozo monument constructed in it. This monument contains an elevator leading up to Hanubia, with the elevator shaft visible through multiple areas of ZDR.[1] A long bridge spans a large basin of water, although there are noticeable cracks in the bridge, indicating it is not structurally sound. Large Chozo Soldier statues are present on either side of the bridge, as well as trees with pink leaves resembling cherry blossoms. In gameplay, this area is in the background, with the foreground consisting of a stone walkway with a round center. A series of ledges leads up to a Charge Beam Door on the left, while the right features an opening that goes into the caves of Artaria.

Later, after water is drained into other areas of Artaria, three thin streams of water begin to pour into the basin from the background, raising the water to about the level of the in-game walkway. The source of this water is a room in Artaria's E.M.M.I. Zone, where Samus must stand on a platform to flood water underneath a platform in order to raise it, therefore allowing her to access a slope and escape. This room is directly above the Artaria entrance. If the water-raising platform is skipped via a single Wall Jump glitch, the entrance will not flood, but the sound of falling water can still be heard.[2]

Much later, Artaria freezes over after thermal energy from Cataris is cut off. The leftmost door into the entrance room, and the path to it from the right side are both blocked by indestructible ice, making it inaccessible until the obstruction is dealt with. After the planet's temperature returns to normal, the room can be accessed again.

Initial cave[]

Main article: Initial cave
Initial cave

The "initial cave" is the second room explored in Artaria, serving as the entrance to the interior caverns of the area. The cave is the second room explored in Dread, and serves as the entrance to the interior of Artaria. It is entirely composed of cavernous rock, without any artificial materials, save for blocks, an Ammo Recharge Station and the two doors in the room. Multiple stalagmites of varying size grow in the background. Several Deer inhabit the cave on the first visit, quickly running away when startled by Samus Aran. This room also provides multiple tutorials for the game's controls.

The lowest part of the cave is a winding passage with multiple steps and ledges to be jumped over. Soon, Samus is presented with her first obstacle under which she can slide. This gives way to a high ledge with a door, and a Breakable Organic Block above. A second tutorial teaches Samus how to use Free Aim, which she must to destroy the block and continue. Once destroyed, the block exposes a ledge Samus can jump to, leading to another gap to slide under. This is followed by a short shaft with Fake Blocks in the walls and a Kreep crawling along them. Samus can either shoot the blocks out and grab the ledges they expose to climb it, or Wall Jump.

At the top is the first Ammo Recharge Station, and another ledge to the right with a Missile Block. To the station's left is a tunnel that is one diameter off the ground, which bars Samus from entering it without the Morph Ball. When approaching the Missile Block, the game provides another tutorial on how to fire Missiles and detect Fake Blocks. Once Samus passes through several walls of those, she can reach the exit and continue her mission.

Network Station A[]

Artaria Network Station A

Network Station A is the third room explored in Artaria, and the first Network Station visited on ZDR. When Samus enters it for the first time, a cutscene plays in which she walks toward the communication platform, which spins around to show its interface socket. Samus inserts her Arm Cannon into it, uploading her mission data to ADAM. He briefs Samus about the "dramatic physical changes" noted in her, the physical amnesia she has suffered, and gives her the objective of returning to her Gunship on the surface. ADAM further asks Samus to contact him whenever she reaches a Network Station.

The briefing is as follows.

"So, you've accessed a network station. Well done, Samus. I have reviewed your vital signs and video log from the data you uploaded.

I've run a full analysis. But I cannot account for why you lost consciousness. My readings indicate dramatic physical changes in you.

Whatever caused these changes seems to have stripped you of most abilities. You might call it physical amnesia.

That brings me to your assailant. I am checking the Federation database against your video log. It appears to have been a Chozo. The attacker's identity is not yet clear.

I have determined that you are somewhere within the depths of ZDR. Your top priority should be to return to your ship on the surface. This situation is...precarious. Trust your instincts as you navigate upward.

This planet appears to consist of multiple areas. Shuttles, elevators, and other modes of transport connect them. Keep an eye out for ways to reach the surface.

The ship's location is marked on your global map. Check it for yourself.

You may encounter pockets of low temperature. Your Metroid DNA renders you vulnerable to such environments. Spending time in cold areas will be harmful to you.

There are many such cold areas scattered underground. Do not enter them with your basic Power Suit.

One final thing. Underground interference is preventing radio transmissions. Check in with me at any network stations you find.

Kreep cave[]

Metroid Dread slug creature

The "Kreep cave" is a small subterranean room that follows the first Network Station. As the name implies, it contains two Kreeps as its sole inhabitants throughout the game. The entrance is positioned on a straight rocky ledge and adjacent to another, smaller ledge. Jagged rocks stretch into the background, with parts of the floor clearly having broken away and fallen into an abyss below. During the planetary cooling sequence, Samus passes through the Kreep cave, uninhabited and frozen over like the rest of Artaria. Once the Experiment has been eliminated, it returns to normal.

Arbitrary Enky room[]

Arbitrary Enky room

The "Arbitrary Enky room" is a room in Artaria. It appears in Metroid Dread. This is a small, two-floor room that leads into Artaria's E.M.M.I. Zone. The top level is initially tightly packed, with only a small ledge above the floor being accessible. A wall on the left does not extend completely to the floor, leaving a small gap; however, the small step and lack of Morph Ball prevent Samus from Sliding or rolling under it. Two pairs of canisters and a crate are present on the upper level as well, along with a large black cable and two bent and fallen grates. Above the ledge are two Breakable Organic Blocks in the left wall. When shot, the organic matter explodes and destroys part of the wall, exposing a short vent (see below). The rubble from the wall creates a level floor so that Samus can slide under the gap and enter the E.M.M.I. Zone. Simultaneously, it creates another barrier behind her that she cannot overcome without the Morph Ball, forcing Samus to proceed through the Zone.

The lower floor is not accessible until Samus has used a "thermal power flow machine" nearby. A Total Recharge Station is present here, as is a pipeline that delivers thermal energy into the E.M.M.I. Zone. A gap in the background wall exists behind the station, with cables coming out of it. However, this area is inaccessible. Samus can come and go through this floor to access the E.M.M.I. Zone and outer Artaria during her exploration. After E.M.M.I.-02SM is defeated, the lower floor is blocked off by an Enky (hence the name). Only after Samus re-acquires Ice Missiles can she remove it.

Jaffe Room[]

Main article: Jaffe Room
Ply 1

The "Jaffe Room" is a room in Artaria. It appears in Metroid Dread. The Jaffe Room is a large chamber in the upper right corner of Artaria, and the first in the thermal energy region that is near Cataris. It is of primarily artificial construction. Curved red pipes are visible in the background, in addition to a large horizontal pipe through which thermal energy is routed. At least three large structures are present on the floor in the background, as well as a large window overlooking a bright magma siphon nearby. A wide vent is present on the back wall near the top.

At the base of the room is a large T-shaped structure, with a thin gap that can be slid under; a Missile Tank is present here. To the right is a Thermal Door, which cannot be opened without routing thermal energy to it through a nearby machine. Above the structure is a thin ceiling that partially consists of Beam Blocks. Shooting these opens up a passageway above, at the end of which is a narrow passage in the wall. This leads into a slope in the next room, making it a one-way exit. Samus can get back into this room once she re-routes energy to the Thermal Door.

When ZDR's thermal energy is cut off by Experiment No. Z-57 and Artaria freezes over, all points of access to the Jaffe Room are frozen or normally unreachable. Through a tricky to pull off Ball Spark, it is possible to enter the room through the narrow passage.[3] Ice has formed over parts of the wall, and the Plies in the room are replaced with Icefleas. The room returns to normal once Z-57 is killed.

This is the first room where the Cave 003 theme plays.

Geothermal bridge[]

Main article: Geothermal bridge
Metroid Dread Report Vol

The "geothermal bridge" is a room in Artaria. It appears in Metroid Dread. The room is set in a massive geothermal cavern filled with lava. While the outer area including the visitable magma below is superheated, this glass bridge is insulated, making it safe for traversal. The glass is fogged up from the heat outside, creating an almost blue tint. At the entrance to the room is a small hallway with four rectangular windows on the left wall (the background from the game's perspective) and a pane of glass on the right wall (in the foreground), sealed with three supports that resemble the Roman numeral for 2.

Within the bridge itself, the cavern can be seen extending into the background. As Samus nears the exit, the camera zooms out to show the full room. The bridge's notable features include constantly flowing embers, jagged rocks, splashes from lava in the background, and a bright glow suggesting the end of a tunnel. The central feature is a large absorption port from the ceiling; this is where thermal energy is extracted by a processing system in Cataris, which then routes it to the rest of ZDR. The generator absorbs this energy in the form of a large lava plume that spins slowly like a tornado, although the port does not move with it.

The bridge is held up by seven support "claws" attached to the ceiling. Underneath the bridge is a flat rock ledge on the left, and two flame jets that release exhaust at regular intervals, making noise as they do so. Their noise, and that of the thermal port, is silenced in the entrance hall. The underside of the bridge is a blue magnetic strip, although it is not marked as one on the Map.

Magma keeps the surrounding cave superheated during the cooldown of ZDR late into Samus's mission. However, this bridge's insulation allows it to freeze over anyway, and since Experiment No. Z-57 has stopped the flow of thermal energy, the "plume" of lava is gone. The lava flow resumes once the creature has been annihilated.[4]

Charge Beam room[]

Metroid Dread Charge beam

The "Charge Beam room" is the first Item Room in Artaria and Dread overall. It is entered via a tunnel from the prior room, which gives way into a slope. A Chozo Statue on a slightly raised platform holds the Charge Beam encased in an Item Sphere. Once Samus collects it, she can jump on the upper ledge to the right to open a Charge Beam Door and return to the previous room.

Corpius' room[]

Main article: Corpius' room
Corpious' tail stuck

"Corpius' room" is a room in Artaria. It appears in Metroid Dread and is the location of Corpius, a boss. This is a massive room with red sand covering the floor. Rays of sunshine can be seen pouring into the room from the ceiling, suggesting it is not very deep underground. A massive Chozo statue can be seen in the background on a slight incline, seemingly held up by large cables. The Chozo is wearing a cloak and appears to have its arms outstretched, and it is standing on a flat disc. Ribcages belonging to an unknown creature, protruding spikes, boulders, patches of white sand, curved buttresses and more cables can also be seen in the background.

Samus runs into the room before noticing the massive Chozo statue. As she observes it and continues forward, Corpius materializes from behind her. Samus attacks it before sliding under its body, commencing their battle. During the fight, Corpius destroys parts of the wall with its tail, exposing blue magnetic strips. Samus is able to jump and hold onto these with her Spider Magnet for the next part of the fight. Eventually, Samus defeats Corpius and sends it crashing into the Chozo statue, destroying it completely. The disc that was the statue's base lands atop Corpius' head, dealing a finishing blow. Samus picks up the bulb on the beast's tail before its body disintegrates, revealing the Phantom Cloak Aeion ability.

When Artaria experiences a drop in temperature, the door to this room freezes over, making it inaccessible. It can be visited again when Samus kills Experiment No. Z-57, restoring thermal power.

Varia Suit room[]

Metroid Dread Item Room with Varia Suit

The "Varia Suit room" is an Item Room found near the top of Artaria. It is the location of the Varia Suit, which is fittingly acquired after escaping a room that began to overheat. This room shows signs of damage, with portions of the floor being warped, an overhead light flickering, and rubble. To access the Chozo Statue holding the Varia Suit, Samus must jump to an edge and roll through a short tunnel with her Morph Ball, to reach an upper chamber filled with rubble. The statue is in the back corner on a raised platform. When the suit is acquired, an orange energy courses along Samus's Power Suit, before she leaps into the air triumphantly. After a flash of light, Samus lands with her Varia Suit restored to her.

Metroid Dread Grapple beam

The "Grapple Beam room" is another Item Room containing the Grapple Beam. Notable features in front of the entrance is a pile of debris with a fallen cable, and two hanging cables above, next to an upper ledge with a Grapple Beam Door and a midair platform with a Grapple Beam Block. When Samus enters, the door locks behind her and cannot be opened. Samus must collect the Grapple Beam from a Chozo Statue at the end of a raised platform, and then pull the Grapple Beam Block off its ledge, so she can reach the door and leave.

Screw Attack complex[]

Main article: Screw Attack complex
Screw Attack complex

The "Screw Attack complex" is a segmented room in Artaria on ZDR. It is where Samus Aran obtains the Screw Attack in Metroid Dread. This room is located near the left edge of Artaria and consists of what may be considered sub-rooms, linked to each other by Screw Attack Blocks and Bomb Blocks. The upper parts of this room are mostly artificial, but the lower section is more cavernous and rocky. Samus reaches the complex shortly after descending the elevator from Burenia while Experiment No. Z-57 is blocking the routing of thermal energy from Cataris. As such, this is one of the first places where she sees the consequences of the planet's rapidly dropping temperature, such as the large amounts of ice that have covered Artaria.

One platform near the entrance from Burenia rotates 90° clockwise after Samus steps on it, permanently sealing two parts of the room from each other - though she can go between them again once she has obtained the Screw Attack - and forcing her to drop down to a Total Recharge Station that she can use if she wishes. She then discovers a second problem: the lower parts of this room contain entire pools of water that have frozen; because she cannot melt or break this ice, it becomes an impassable obstacle for her as long as the abnormally low temperatures persist. A Chozo Statue is visible in the center of this room, but the ice makes it inaccessible to her. To the upper right is a blue Teleportal, which Samus cannot reach or use yet either. Use of the Morph Ball is necessary to traverse the room even when it is not frozen over.

Once Samus has killed Z-57 and restored ZDR's temperatures to normal, she returns to this room optionally via the matching blue Teleportal in Cataris. As this room is no longer frozen, all ice in it has now thawed into normal water that Samus can move through with no limitations thanks to her Gravity Suit. She acquires the Screw Attack from the Chozo Statue and uses her new upgrade to break through the Screw Attack Blocks and leave the room. When in the Chozo Statue's part of the chamber, the Cave theme changes to Statueroom, which plays until Samus obtains the Screw Attack and leaves. After this, the Cave theme will play throughout the whole room.

By sequence breaking, Samus can also acquire the Screw Attack before defeating Z-57. There is a hidden path through Artaria's E.M.M.I. Zone, through which she can eventually reach the Screw Attack Chozo Statue from a Pitfall Block above it.

The background of this room features several windows showing a massive amount of water, which, naturally, is frozen while the thermal routing system is blocked. Because of this room's proximity to the oceanic Burenia, it is likely that the walls and windows in its background are keeping Artaria from being flooded by seawater.
