Ventilation Shaft
The Ventilation Shaft is a room in the Phazon Mines. It appears in Metroid Prime. The Ventilation Shaft is defined by the half-pipe in it, which bears an ornate design of stonework, metal and glass through which the mine caverns outside can be seen. Dropping into the half-pipe, Samus can use her Boost Ball to boost up onto upper ledges that lead to Elite Control and Omega Research on either side. Two large ventilation fans are built into the walls on either side of the half-pipe, along with two smaller vents in the ceiling. One fan with larger blades is operating at minimal power, while the other is offline.
The first time this room is accessed, Puffers will emerge from the ceiling vents. The creatures fill the air with their meta-viprium gas, which the powered fan spreads throughout the room. Samus has no choice but to quickly escape the room before her energy is depleted. Once she returns with the Power Bomb, Samus is able to destroy a Bendezium grate in the floor underneath the inactive fan and access the Control Room. Here, an Interface Module is present; when scanned, the inactive ventilation fan is activated. This pushes the Puffers into the working fan, killing them all, dispersing the gas and destroying the fan. Once it is destroyed, an Energy Tank can be accessed.
In the original Japanese and New Play Control! versions of Metroid Prime, Samus's Suit Voice will say "Poison gas detected" when the gas begins to fill the room. Through Options in Metroid Prime Remastered, this voiceover can be toggled on or off.

Upon a second visit (or if Samus restarts the game from the Save Station), Metroids will appear here, inside stasis tanks. Should Samus get closer to the lab area, a small blackout will occur, the loss of power will allow the Metroids in captivity to escape and attack Samus. Any other visits will simply have Metroids wandering this room, primarily situated near or directly above the large Phazon pit.
