Lum Ell[1] is an aquatic, non-hostile specimen in Metroid Dread.

Description[]

Lum Ells strongly resemble deep-sea dragonfishes, possessing elongated bodies and a dangling bioluminescent lure. They are also reminiscent of garden eels, since they are eel-like creatures that partially emerge from the sandy seafloor.

They are found at the very bottom of underwater Burenia, perching out of the seafloor. Lum Ells sway in the water retracting into the ground if approached by Samus or an X Parasite; even if the former is a great distance away. This is most notable in a corridor two rooms to the left of the large shaft in Burenia, near the Gravity Suit.[2] However, they do not react to any beams, Missiles or Power Bombs Samus deploys in their direction. After a few seconds underground, they will re-emerge.

Their skittishness and elongated bodies make them similar to the Tangle Weed, Reaper Vines and Darkling Tentacles of the Metroid Prime series.

Whether the Lum Ells fell prey to the X Parasites after their release from Elun is unknown, since they remain docile and cannot be killed to release X. Lum Ells retract into the floor if approached by an X, presumably to avoid infection.[2] The X have been known to ignore bioforms if they are perceived as potentially weak hosts (like the Etecoons and Dachoras), although ADAM instructs Samus to assume that all life on ZDR has become infected.
