Lyle Smithsonian (ライアル・スミソニアン Raiaru Sumisonian) is a soldier in the Galactic Federation Army, working as a Special Ops Soldier in the 07th Platoon led by Commander Adam Malkovich in Metroid: Other M.[2]
Biography[]
Lyle trained in the Galactic Federation Academy at Training Base #3, before pursuing further training at the Special Ops Training Center. He was then transferred in the 07th Platoon as a Special Ops Soldier, being placed in charge of demolition assignments.[2]
Upon entering the BOTTLE SHIP with the 07th Platoon, Lyle is put to work penetrating a Missile shield. The Federation explosives fail, so Lyle suggests using a laser to slowly burn through the seal. However, the arrival of Samus Aran and her use of a Missile quickly negate the need for a laser.
Entering the BOTTLE SHIP Control Room, Lyle is startled by a Brug emerging from beneath a Lab Worker's corpse. He kicks it away and fires at it repeatedly with his assault rifle, until James Pierce instructs him to stop. Lyle assists the platoon in fighting the Brug Mass despite his fear of insects. He is then ordered by Adam to investigate Sector 1 / Biosphere. Lyle secures the Exam Center during his investigation, and Adam orders Samus to rendezvous with him and the other soldiers there after restoring electrical system in the Main Sector.
When Samus and the 07th Platoon arrive at the Exam Center, Lyle is nowhere to be found. Shortly after the encounter with the Mystery Creature, the soldiers discover Lyle's body lying in the grass. He was apparently torn to shreds by the recently molted Little Birdie, whose blood is trailed from Lyle's corpse.
Description[]
Lyle demonstrating his hatred of insects.
Lyle Smithsonian is a male, Caucasian human who stands at the same height as James Pierce. He has light brown hair with bangs, reddish-brown eyes, and a prominent nose. He wears a Galactic Federation Power Suit equipped with the standard Federation handgun, Submachine Gun, and Freeze Gun, plus an assault rifle. He is also entrusted with the 07th Platoon's explosives.
Lyle has a hot-headed personality. He appears to have an affinity for explosives, as Adam feels the need to instruct him to "show a little restraint with the explosives" in the Biosphere. Curiously, Lyle reacts very strongly to a Brug, violently annihilating it with his assault rifle. After defeating the Emperor Brug, Lyle can also be heard telling the other soldiers, "I'm fine, but did it have to be bugs?", in the background. This behavior suggests that he suffers from entomophobia or a fear of insects. This is especially ironic, as he earlier seems heroic and cunning when dealing with a Missile shield.

Trivia[]
- Concept art shows that Lyle was originally planned to have a "gentle, tender" personality. This was changed for the final game, instead being described as the "rough, impatient" type.[1]
- When Lyle's corpse is initially discovered, it cannot be seen because of the rest of the 07th Platoon blocking it from sight. However, it can be examined if Samus returns to it and looks at it in Search View afterwards.
- The direct cause of Lyle's death remains uncertain and is left unspecified in his Characters log description. While Little Birdie may have killed him, the Deleter could have also killed him and left his body for Little Birdie to devour. This is supported by the fact that the Deleter demolished the Exam Center shortly thereafter, possibly using Lyle's explosives.
- It is possible that Lyle's corpse along with those of Maurice Favreau and James Pierce are taken by the Galactic Federation to be given a proper burial prior to the post-credits sequence. However, this cannot be confirmed, as the Biosphere Test Area cannot be accessed in the epilogue.
- Using out-of-bounds cheats to pass through the locked door into the Exam Center during the epilogue shows that Lyle's body has vanished, possibly confirming the former outcome.
- There are numerous flowers around Lyle's body, causing the scene to resemble a funeral of sorts.
