Ahh. No dice! I think our only option is to use the laser to slowly burn our way through. This is gonna take a while...

—Lyle Smithsonian

Lyle Smithsonian (ライアル・スミソニアン Raiaru Sumisonian?) was a soldier in the Galactic Federation Army, working as special ops in the 07th Platoon led by Adam Malkovich in Metroid: Other M.[2]

Biography[]

Lyle trained in the Galactic Federation Academy at Training Base #3, before pursuing further training at the Special Ops Training Center. He was then transferred in the 07th Platoon as a special ops soldier, being placed in charge of demolition assignments.[2]

Upon entering the BOTTLE SHIP with the 07th Platoon, Lyle was put to work penetrating a Red Blast Shield. The Federation explosives failed, so Lyle suggested using a laser to slowly burn through the seal. However, the arrival of Samus Aran and her use of a Missile quickly negated the need for a laser.

Entering the Control Room, Lyle was startled by a Brug emerging from beneath a Lab Worker's corpse. He kicked it away and shot it repeatedly with his assault rifle, until James Pierce instructed him to stop. He assisted the Platoon in fighting the Brug Mass despite his fear of insects. He was then ordered by Adam to investigate the Biosphere. Lyle secured the Exam Center during his investigation, and Adam ordered Samus to rendezvous with him and the other soldiers there after restoring power in the Main Sector.

When Samus and the 07th Platoon arrived at the Exam Center, Lyle was no where to be found. Shortly after the encounter with the Mystery Creature, the soldiers discovered Lyle's body lying in the grass, torn to shreds by an unknown monster. It was likely that this was a result of Little Birdie eating parts of his body (as its blood was trailed from Lyle's corpse), which led to Little Birdie molting into his adolescent form. However, the direct cause of his death remains uncertain: while Little Birdie may have killed him itself, the Deleter could have also killed him and left his body for Little Birdie to devour. This is supported by the fact that the Deleter demolished the Exam Center shortly thereafter, possibly using Lyle's explosives.

Description[]

Lyle Smithsonian was a male, Caucasian human who stood at the same height as James Pierce. He had light brown hair with bangs, reddish-brown eyes, and a prominent nose. He wore a Galactic Federation Power Suit equipped with the standard Federation handgun and Freeze Gun, plus an assault rifle. He was also entrusted with the 07th Platoon's explosives.

Lyle had a hot-headed personality. He appeared to have an affinity for explosives, as Adam felt the need to instruct him to "show a little restraint with the explosives" in the Biosphere. Curiously, Lyle reacted very strongly to a Brug, violently annihilating it with his rifle. After defeating the Emperor Brug, Lyle can also be heard telling the others "I'm fine, but did it have to be bugs?" in the background. This behavior suggested that he suffered from entomophobia or a fear of insects. This was especially ironic as he earlier seemed heroic and cunning when dealing with a Red Blast Shield.

Trivia[]

  • Concept art shows that Lyle was originally planned to have a "gentle, tender" personality. This was changed for the final game, instead being described as the "rough, impatient" type.[1]
  • When Lyle's corpse was initially discovered, it could not be seen because of the rest of the 07th Platoon blocking it from sight. However, it could be examined if Samus went back to it and looked at it in Search View afterwards.
  • It was possible that Lyle's corpse along with Maurice Favreau's and James Pierce's are taken by the Galactic Federation to be given a proper burial prior to the post-credits sequence. However, this could not be confirmed as the Biosphere Test Area cannot be accessed in the post-credits.
    • Using out of bounds cheats to pass through the locked door into the exam center post-credits shows that Lyle's body has vanished, possibly confirming the former outcome.
  • There are numerous flowers around Lyle's body, causing the scene to look like a funeral of sorts.
