Magma Crabs[1] are a species of non-hostile crustacean in Metroid Dread. They appear in lower Cataris, in three superheated caverns found before Kraid's lair.

Despite being called "crabs", they more closely resemble snails with two antennae and a large shell they can retract their bodies into. Magma Crabs have two front "teeth" and a pair of limbs with curved claws. They appear in pairs or groups of three and are easily frightened by nearby creatures, namely Samus or nearby enemies, such as Obsydomithons or Rodomithon-X.

When startled, Magma Crabs will either retract their antennae, or jump into a pit of lava in the background. It is suggested that these crabs can survive in lava considering they respawn on later visits. Those that retract into their shells do not re-emerge even if Samus moves away from them.

It is unlikely that Magma Crabs fell prey to the X Parasites after their release from Elun, as they remain docile and cannot be killed to release X, nor do they display any signs of X infection. Although ADAM instructs Samus to assume that all life on ZDR has become infected, the X have been known to ignore bioforms if they are perceived as potentially weak hosts.
