Matad Area01 Damage is the internal name for a brooding theme in Metroid: Samus Returns. It was composed by Daisuke Matsuoka.
Description[]
It is heard the lowest tunnels of Area 6 after the second Chozo Seal has been activated, and Samus Aran explores the caves that have been drained of purple liquid. The theme is presumably meant to build up to the confrontation with the Diggernaut that Samus is soon to have, and plays until the robot emerges from behind a blast door. The theme features droning effects and a low chorus. About 43 seconds into the song, a persistent rumbling can be heard. The theme can be heard here: [1]
Matad Area01 Damage may possibly be inspired by a theme from Metroid II: Return of Samus composed by Ryoji Yoshitomi. This original theme likewise consists of low droning ambience, and it is played in the corridor leading up to a major boss battle; in this case, it plays in Phase 9 just before the battle against the Queen Metroid. While the Queen Metroid has no such buildup in the remake, Matad Area01 Damage may have possibly been Daisuke Matsuoka's reference to the original theme, although this is not confirmed.
Trivia[]
- The name of the theme, "Matad", is a reference to the development codename of Samus Returns, Matadora.
- Despite its internal name containing "Area01", this theme does not play at all in Area 1. It shares this distinction with another Area 6 theme, Area1 Add1.
