The Metroid Dread Demo (stylized as Metroid Dread DEMO) is a free demo for the game of the same name. It was released for free on the Nintendo eShop on October 28, 2021 as a digital download.

The demo allows players to play through the first part of the full game. Before a February 9, 2022 update, the demo would end after exiting the Artaria E.M.M.I. Zone once E.M.M.I.-02SM was defeated and the Spider Magnet acquired. Through Sequence Breaking, it was possible to reach Corpius and defeat it, but doing so would cause the demo to crash. If Corpius was fought, the boss music would be missing along with the audio in cutscenes. The February 2022 update extended the demo to allow players to fight Corpius without issue, and added a Rookie Mode, which was also added to the full game. The demo now ends after exiting the "waterfall checkpoint".

Save Stations cannot be used in the demo, and there is no option to save after using Map or Network Stations. Attempting to save produces a message that says "The save feature is not available in this demo." The amiibo scanner in the Options menu is also unavailable.

Cutscenes are skippable - by pressing plus (+) during the cutscene and then it will show "minus (-) to skip scene". It does hide it; rather than just show it upfront unlike most games with skippable cutscenes.

The Title Screen includes a link to purchase the full game from the eShop by pressing the B button on the Joy-Cons. When the demo ends, the player is presented with an option to buy the full game.

Nintendo News - Treat yourself to a strong start 1

Treat yourself to a strong start in the free Metroid Dread demo with these tips.

"Just in time for Halloween, you can raise your spooky spirit by downloading and trying the free demo of the Metroid™ Dread game.

Something sinister is brewing on planet ZDR. What lurks in the darkness? Whatever it is, you can start prepping with a few tips listed below."

The story
"After mysterious transmission draws bounty hunter Samus Aran to planet ZDR, she learns the remote planet has been overrun by vicious alien lifeforms and chilling mechanical menaces. Now, Samus must hunt or be hunted as she makes her way through a labyrinth of enemies and an inhuman threat stalking the depths of ZDR."
Starting strong
"As part of the 2D Metroid series, known for its side-scrolling mix of exploration and action, you'll need to run, jump, and shoot your way through danger. While the game will explain the controls for Samus' various abilities, we've gathered some basic tips to help you get this adventure rolling."
  • Slide: You may notice there are tight spaces close to the ground with an open area on the other side. If you run towards these narrow passages and press the ZL Button, you can slide right through.
  • Melee Counter: Enemies are just itching to get a piece of you, but as Samus, you can stop your enemies in their tracks with a Melee Counter. When an enemy is about to attack, you'll see it quickly flash a light. Then, it's your time to shine! When you see this, press the X Button to Melee Counter. You can follow it up with a powerful blast from your Arm Cannon.
Dash Melee: A Melee Counter becomes a powerful Dash Melee when running. This can instantly close the gap between you and the enemy so you can land an aggressive counter. Plus, this can damage enemies, unlike other Melee Counters. Full speed ahead!
  • Wall Jump: You may run into a ledge that looks a little too high to reach. Try to jump at an angle against a vertical surface, causing Samus to kick off the wall. You can use Wall Jumps to propel yourself upward, bouncing from one surface to the next. Just make sure that you can reach whatever you're planning to kick off from.
On the map
"Planet ZDR is a sprawling world with lots of areas to discover. You can open the full map by pressing the + Button or extend your minimap using the Left Button on the directional pad. Being familiar with the map features may be crucial to your exploration.
  • Highlight Icons: There may be times when you spot an icon on the map and realize you've seen it before; somewhere out of reach. But where was that, again? By selecting the icon and pressing the Y Button, you can turn on Icon Highlight. This handy feature will highlight similar icons across the map!
  • Place Marker: Once on the map, you may want to make a note of where you're going or points of interest that you'd like to come back to later. By pressing the A Button, you can set up to six markers across the map.
  • Breakable walls: The planet holds all kinds of secrets. If you ever hit a dead end, remember that a seemingly normal wall may open a new path. So, if something looks a little fishy (or you're not sure where to go next), try to fire Samus' Arm Cannon or a Missile at the wall. It might sound crazy...but could be crazy enough to work!

"We hope these tips will have you ready to suit up and take on whatever mysteries await in Metroid Dread. And if you'd like to learn more about Samus' adventures, check out your news feed for even more Metroid articles."
