Nintendo News is an application on the Nintendo Switch, which provides press releases and articles pertaining to upcoming Nintendo games. A fair number of Metroid Dread-related articles have been shared via the service in the lead-up to the game's release and afterwards, as well as one for Metroid Prime Remastered.

Here's a new look at Metroid Dread![]

Published: August 27, 2021.

Get to know the fearless bounty hunter Samus Aran.[]

Published: September 8, 2021.

"The intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran has fought her way across a variety of planets in the Metroid™ series. Orphaned at an early age, she was taken in and raised by the alien race known as the Chozo.

Armed with altered DNA (courtesy of the Chozo), elite Galactic Federation Army training, and her one-of-a-kind Power Suit made from Chozo technology, Samus has successfully completed missions believed to be impossible.

As a new menace rises in the Metroid™ Dread game, you can learn about some of her previous missions below."

Fun Facts

  • The word "Metroid" comes from combining "metro" (in the sense of an underground transit system) with "android" (a humanoid robot).
  • When Samus was young, she lost her parents and her home in a tragic incident and was raised by the Chozo on planet Zebes. During that time, she received a Chozo DNA transplant, which allows her to adapt to environments that are otherwise harsh for humans.
  • It's been 19 years since a brand-new title has been released in this Metroid saga.

Five things to know before playing Metroid Dread.[]

Published: September 17, 2021.

"The Metroid™ Dread game comes out in a few short weeks (October 8th to be exact) and will be packed with flashy sci-fi action and creepy environments to explore.

If you're interested in the new game but haven't played any of the previous Metroid games, don't worry about it: the prologue of Metroid Dread explains and summarized the events prior to the game. However, if you want a little bit of background info before you jump in, this article may help!"

Note: We'll keep spoilers to a minimum.

What kind of game is it?
"Like other games in the franchise, Metroid Dread is all about exploring an atmospheric, maze-like world. The planet ZDR isn't exactly a vacation getaway - on this isolating planet, there are a bunch of creepy things that want to ruin your day. Luckily you play as Samus Aran, a skilled bounty hunter who's highly trained with advanced weaponry.
As you explore, you'll find new weapons and items to make Samus stronger. Adding abilities will also allow her to explore new destinations, discover alternate routes, and find more secrets."
Sooo...who is Samus, again?
"Samus Aran is said to be the strongest bounty hunter in the galaxy. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised by the mysterious and technologically advanced Chozo species (we'll get to them a little later).
Samus often wears her super high-tech Power Suit on missions, which is why many people don't know what she really looks like. She also has a kindness and compassion that may not be immediately apparent. Oh, and while she was born a human, she has since been genetically enhanced with Chozo DNA (we'll leave it at that...it's a whole thing).

If you haven't played a Metroid game before, you may have first seen her as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate game. The Zero Suit Samus fighter is what she looks like without the Power Suit."

Wait...I thought the main character was named Metroid?
"Believe us, this is a common mistake! Not to be confused with Samus, Metroids are terrifying creatures that can attach onto other organisms and absorb their energy. Some scoundrels have tried to weaponize Metroids in the past, and it has been up to Samus to clean up the resulting mess."
What else do I need to know from past games?
"None of this info is necessary to know, but it may help fill in the blanks.
The Galactic Federation is a powerful, governing organization made of many different worlds. They have been known to hire Samus for important missions in the past.
The Chozo are a hyperintelligent species interested in galactic harmony (and they look rather bird-like). They took care of Samus after she was orphaned as a child and used their advanced tech to design her Power Suit. As a race of explorers, Chozo ruins have been discovered in several locations across the galaxy. It is unknown what has become of their civilization by the time Metroid Dread starts.
The X parasite is one of the deadliest life forms in the universe. It can inhabit living or dead organic creatures and use their host's genetic information to mimic them completely. They are so dangerous, the Chozo created the Metroid species as a way to destroy the X parasite (which, let's be real, didn't turn out great). Samus' last run-in with the X parasite led to their complete annihilation when their native planet of SR388 was destroyed."
So what is Samus up against in Metroid Dread?
"Samus will face many challenges on her latest adventure, but some of the deadliest are robots called E.M.M.I. - Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier. The E.M.M.I. were originally created as highly agile research robots equipped with the ability to extract DNA. They were sent to planet ZDR to investigate a mysterious transmission but contact with them was lost.
So why are they hunting down Samus? Well...we said there wouldn't be spoilers in this article! But you can find out when Metroid Dread comes out on October 8th.
If you would like to pre-order the game, please visit the link below."

Get set for your Metroid Dread experience.[]

Published: October 1, 2021.

"The release of the Metroid™ Dread game is almost here. Are you ready to suit up as the intergalactic bounty hunter, Samus Aran?!

...

Your silence is telling...That's okay! We're help to help you get ready for the Oct. 8th launch of the game with a few tips.

The story
"After mysterious transmission draws bounty hunter Samus Aran to planet ZDR, she learns the remote planet has been overrun by vicious alien lifeforms and chilling mechanical menaces. Now, Samus must hunt or be hunted as she makes her way through a labyrinth of enemies and an inhuman threat stalking the depths of ZDR."
Prepare for the adventure
"There's no wrong way to get ready for Metroid Dread. Whether you're a seasoned Metroid fan or new to the series, please remember that you don't need to have played the previous games in the saga to enjoy this new one. Just have fun getting ready for the adventure!
That being said, we have a couple of suggestions to get you locked and loaded for the dangers ahead.
  • Discover (or revisit) two classic Metroid games: With a Nintendo Switch Online membership*, you can access 100+ classic Nintendo Entertainment System™ and Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ games-including the 1994 Super Metroid™ game and the original 1987 Metroid™ game.
  • Smash it up: In the Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate game, you can duke it out as series characters Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Dark Samus, and Ridley in classic Metroid locations. In Music mode, you can also jam out to tunes from the series while doing sweet Samus-inspired moves**.
  • Read the Metroid Dread Report: Get all sorts of fun insights straight from the developers, including early game play tips! You can check them out at: https://metroid.nintendo.com/news.
  • Pre-order and pre-load: If you pre-order Metroid Dread, the game will automatically download to your Nintendo Switch™ system once it's available to pre-load***. It's a quick way to start playing as soon as the game launches.
Create an immersive space
  • Set the tone: If you can, we suggest dimming the lights to a darker-yet comfortable-setting. And, if possible, consider playing with headphones on at night-not only are they great for immersion, but there's less risk of waking anyone up.
  • Treat yourself: Bounty Hunters get hungry, too! Why not flex your creativity with some themed bites? Perhaps a plate of Samus arancini, or-well, really, any pun-based cuisine is a win in our book.
  • Cover the little red lights in your home: Is that an E.M.M.I. or a coffee machine in standby mode? Put a sticky note or something over red lights to avoid accidental scares late at night.
What's next?
"Now that you've created a gaming space (and perhaps had a snack), we hope you're ready to lay out your finest space gear in anticipation of the Oct. 8th launch of Metroid Dread. We hope that you'll have fun exploring and discovering the secrets that await on Planet ZDR-however that may look for you!

"Just in time for Halloween, you can raise your spooky spirit by downloading and trying the free demo of the Metroid™ Dread game.

Something sinister is brewing on planet ZDR. What lurks in the darkness? Whatever it is, you can start prepping with a few tips listed below."

Starting strong
"As part of the 2D Metroid series, known for its side-scrolling mix of exploration and action, you'll need to run, jump, and shoot your way through danger. While the game will explain the controls for Samus' various abilities, we've gathered some basic tips to help you get this adventure rolling."
  • Slide: You may notice there are tight spaces close to the ground with an open area on the other side. If you run towards these narrow passages and press the ZL Button, you can slide right through.
  • Melee Counter: Enemies are just itching to get a piece of you, but as Samus, you can stop your enemies in their tracks with a Melee Counter. When an enemy is about to attack, you'll see it quickly flash a light. Then, it's your time to shine! When you see this, press the X Button to Melee Counter. You can follow it up with a powerful blast from your Arm Cannon.
Dash Melee: A Melee Counter becomes a powerful Dash Melee when running. This can instantly close the gap between you and the enemy so you can land an aggressive counter. Plus, this can damage enemies, unlike other Melee Counters. Full speed ahead!
  • Wall Jump: You may run into a ledge that looks a little too high to reach. Try to jump at an angle against a vertical surface, causing Samus to kick off the wall. You can use Wall Jumps to propel yourself upward, bouncing from one surface to the next. Just make sure that you can reach whatever you're planning to kick off from.
On the map
"Planet ZDR is a sprawling world with lots of areas to discover. You can open the full map by pressing the + Button or extend your minimap using the Left Button on the directional pad. Being familiar with the map features may be crucial to your exploration.
  • Highlight Icons: There may be times when you spot an icon on the map and realize you've seen it before; somewhere out of reach. But where was that, again? By selecting the icon and pressing the Y Button, you can turn on Icon Highlight. This handy feature will highlight similar icons across the map!
  • Place Marker: Once on the map, you may want to make a note of where you're going or points of interest that you'd like to come back to later. By pressing the A Button, you can set up to six markers across the map.
  • Breakable walls: The planet holds all kinds of secrets. If you ever hit a dead end, remember that a seemingly normal wall may open a new path. So, if something looks a little fishy (or you're not sure where to go next), try to fire Samus' Arm Cannon or a Missile at the wall. It might sound crazy...but could be crazy enough to work!

"We hope these tips will have you ready to suit up and take on whatever mysteries await in Metroid Dread. And if you'd like to learn more about Samus' adventures, check out your news feed for even more Metroid articles."

  • Dread Mode: If you're pretty confident with your Metroid skills, give the Dread Mode difficulty a try! What makes it so dreadful? Well, if you get hit even once, your game is over. But don't worry: You totally got this. Uh, maybe. Um... good luck!
  • Rookie Mode: At the other end of the spectrum is Rookie Mode. This difficulty mode will lend a helping hand with increased recovery. Every bit of health helps while exploring a mysterious, deadly planet, after all.

Sometime in the future, another update will also add a Boss Rush mode where you battle big baddies continuously, one at a time. We'll keep you updated!

Published: April 7, 2022.

"It might be time to suit up and head back to Planet ZDR. A series of new challenges await in this free update to the Metroid™ Dread game!

Feel the Rush
Are you ready to rush through a few all-new modes?
  • Boss Rush: Once you've beaten the main storyline, you can unlock Boss Rush mode. In this mode, you'll try to beat 12 bosses as quickly as possible. At the end of each battle, your missiles will be restored, but any damage you've taken will be carried over to the next boss fight. Each battle can add to the players max missiles, Energy Tank, and Power Bombs, depending on where the boss is in the main game.
  • Survival Rush: This mode can be unlocked after beating Boss Rush mode. In it, you'll try to defeat as many bosses as possible before a timer runs out. Each boss you defeat will add a bit more time to your clock. And if you're able to defeat a boss without taking damage, you'll get even more time added to your clock! Just remember that you won't recover missiles or health between bosses.
  • Dread Rush: After beating Dread Mode, you can unlock Dread Rush mode. Now it's time to put your dodging skills to the test! In this mode, you'll try to beat 12 bosses without stopping-one right after the other. But, if you take a hit, you'll instantly be defeated. On the bright side, missiles are fully recovered after each boss. So...silver lining?
  • Practice Mode: If you're looking to get a little training in, you can practice boss battles in this mode. Try to defeat each boss as fast as you can. Then, you can go back and check your previous times to how you've improved!

While these new modes may seem challenging, we believe you can do your best. Good luck, hunters!"

Experience the critically acclaimed first-person adventure like never before![]

Published: February 8, 2023.

"Tracking on enemy target has been lost. Ground-based recon required. Begin landing sequence.

And with those simple words, a lone gunship skillfully slices its way through the stormy skies of Tallon IV. This eerie-yet-beautiful planet is where intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran has pursued an old nemesis, Meta Ridley. On the hunt for this villain, revived with cybernetic and genetic enhancements, she'll explore lush, interconnected regions, fight fearsome creatures, and discover how a mysterious substance led an entire planet to ruin."

The classic returns
"Out now for the Nintendo Switch™ system, the Metroid Prime™ Remastered game enhances a critically acclaimed adventure with revamped graphics, sound, unlockable art, and updated control schemes. Unlike many Metroid games, this one is a first-person platforming adventure - putting you right behind Samus's visor. Choose from a variety of control schemes like the newly added dual stick setup, enable motion assist, or opt for something more classic as you face down enemies with Samus's advanced weaponry.
And while there is plenty of blasting in this game, it's not all about running and gunning - you'll also need to stop and take in the environment, solve puzzles, and skillfully jump from platform to platform to forge a path ahead."
Suit up as Samus
"Trained as a warrior and infused with Chozo blood, Samus is the galaxy's most lethal bounty hunter for a reason. You'll need to master her wide range of abilities like the Morph Ball and Ice Beam to survive a hostile land. You can also scan the environment to learn more about Tallon IV's mysterious past (and not-quite-friendly creatures)."
Explore an alien world
"Journey through the diverse biomes of planet Tallon IV as you uncover the Space Pirates' sinister experiments. From the quiet stillness of the snowy Phendrana Drifts to the magma geysers of Magmoor Caverns, this alien planet is filled with harsh landscapes and labyrinthine trails. In true Metroid fashion, you'll also need to upgrade your suit to revisit areas and discover previously blocked-off locations.

"Left near dead by an attack from the X parasite, Samus is saved by a vaccine made from Metroid DNA-the X parasite's only natural predator. Now a weakened Samus must exterminate the X as it spreads chaos through a research station orbiting planet SR388.

As you explore this deadly facility, collect classic power-ups like the Screw Attack and Wave Beam to grow stronger. Just be warned because the X parasite can mimic the abilities of what it infects-including Samus! If you see a creature called the SA-X, perhaps you should run..."

"Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can now play the Metroid™ Fusion game, which originally released on the Game Boy™ Advance system in 2002. As a fun fact, the original Metroid Fusion and Metroid Prime™ games came out at the same time!

In Metroid Fusion, you'll experience classic Metroid gameplay as you explore secret passages, master Samus's moves, and (hopefully) put an end to the X parasite menace."

Let's talk about Metroid Prime Remastered![]

Published: March 15, 2023.

[Rapid Rundown video, aka the Accolades Trailer]

The Metroid Prime™ Remastered game is out now, and you can see what some critics are saying by watching the video above. No prob if you want to watch first and get back to reading after.

*patient waits*

OK, are y'all back? If you've heard the name "Metroid Prime" but don't know what all the fuss is about, let's help with a Rapid Rundown. That's where we give you a rundown of a game in an, uh, rapid kind of way (what you see is what you get around here).

Let's get to it!

So, what's the big deal?
Back in the day, playing a Metroid game meant that you were playing a 2D game. You controlled a galactic bounty hunter named Samus Aran, guiding her to explore isolated sci-fi settings, gain powerful abilities, and blast through nasty creatures like the Metroids themselves. In particular, the Super Metroid™ game is beloved by old school 2D platformer fans, while newer games like Metroid Dread continue that 2D tradition.
The original Metroid Prime game was special because it took that 2D series and brought it into 3D for the first time. The "special" part is that it did it in such a way that preserved the exploration, platforming, and moody atmosphere that the series is known for.
Platforming? Wait, I thought this was a shooter?
Well, there's plenty of shooting, so don't worry about that! But first and foremost this game is about exploring an alien planet as Samus herself.
The planet Tallon IV often feels like a giant, interconnected puzzle that you're trying to figure out-you'll explore the diverse depths until you find an ability that may be the key to solving a weird looking puzzle that you may have passed earlier.
You are an explorer in this game...who also happens to be one of the deadliest bounty hunters in the galaxy.
Got it. So what's new in Metroid Prime Remastered?
If you compare the original game next to the remastered one, you'll see and hear the difference right away-the remastered graphics and sound modernize the game while retaining the atmosphere.
Much care also went into the controller options: We highly suggest trying out the newly added dual-stick in-game controls but there are also options that are more in line with the original Nintendo GameCube system's or Wii system's control schemes. You can also adjust your controls in different ways, such as adding gyro support to the dual analog setup. The menu is also where you can find options for the Hint System, Color Assist, and other gameplay tweaks. You can also turn on English voiceover narration in the Sound menu-this narration wasn't present in the original North American release, so it may be new to you!
Finally, newer fans can start the game on a Casual difficulty setting for a less intense experience, and everyone can enjoy newly added Gallery unlocks such as artwork.
What if I'm new to first-person games?
We know that first-person games aren't for everyone?, but this one might be a good introduction. If the game feels too difficult, the aforementioned Casual difficulty setting will help. Also, remember that you can lock on to enemies when shooting to make things a bit easier.
The first-person view does add a lot to the atmosphere-after all, the whole idea is that you're exploring a mysterious planet in Samus's suit. Raindrops will hit the Power Suit's visor as you look up, you can scan bits of your environment to learn about the flora and fauna, and there will be quiet moments when you can just take it all in. Just don't let your guard down too much-Tallon IV isn't the friendliest of places.
Any tips for beginners?
Of course!
The map is your best friend. Please remember that you won't always be able to get everything in a room or reach every area when you first enter it. Refer to your map often and take note on which areas have been fully explored or not. Map Stations will also update map data when you step into the hologram, making exploration easier.
Scan early and scan often! When you enter a room or area:
1 ) Make sure you're safe by clearing out enemies.
2 ) Use your scan visor to get additional hints or extra text about your surroundings.
Oh, and you should definitely scan bosses to learn a bit more about their weaknesses.
Don't forget to save often! Staying true to the original Metroid Prime game, there is no auto-save in this version-you'll need to visit a Save Station or your gunship to save. Luckily, you will find Save Stations throughout your adventure. As you're exploring, be on the lookout for small, inconspicuous side rooms. These rooms will also replenish your energy in case you find yourself in a spotty situation.
If you'd like to buy the digital version of the game, please visit the link below. A physical version was also released in case you're interested.
