The Omega Griever is a boss featured in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It is a massive, mutated Griever that took the place of the guardian Gravinax, which was guarding the Master Teleporter Key in the Great Mines.

Description[]

At one point an ordinary Maul Griever, and then a Maul Griever Brute, the Omega Griever gorged on Green Energy even more than its kin. This caused it to mutate even further, entering a cocoon and emerging as a uniquely powerful specimen. Shortly after its metamorphosis it moved deeper into the Great Mines, tearing its way through the remaining Lamorn barriers. It encountered and killed Gravinex, taking its place as the guardian of the Master Teleporter Key. Shortly afterwards, Samus Aran arrives seeking the key and it attacks her as well.

Battle[]

In the first phase of the battle, only the Omega Griever's head and upper torso is keratinized. It begins the first crawling on the walls and spitting poison at Samus, occasionally jumping across the room to break lock-on and attack from a new angle. It continues until she damages its unkeratinized body parts enough to stun it, causing it to bare its vulnerable chest towards her. After she damages its exposed organ, it falls from the wall and continue to fight. When Samus is distant, it alternates between pouncing twice to close the distance with Samus, striking the ground to create an expanding shockwave, or lashing its tongue at her to grab her and drag her closer. If it succeeds in grabbing her with its tongue, the keratinized portions of its head peel back, allowing Samus to shoot it directly and force it to release her. When she's close to it, it makes two large telegraphed swipes with its claws. Once its unkeratinized body parts take enough damage it slumps over and Samus must lay Bombs under its chest to make it rear back and expose its organ to her attacks. After it recovers, it retaliates by spraying a gout of acid in a large area that can entangle Samus and leaves damaging pools on the ground.

After it has been reduced to about two thirds of its health, the Omega Griever immediately exits its stunned state if it's in it and gives a distinctive screen-shaking roar before leaping to smash into a wall and absorb a significant amount of Green Energy, summoning several Maul Grievers to distract Samus as it does so. The upper arm of its foremost right limb, middle left limb, and hind left limb, the forearm of its middle right limb, and the left side of its back become keratinized, and it returns to attacking Samus from the walls. Once downed from the wall again it continues attacking with mostly the same moves as before. It now creates two shockwaves in quick succession, and it will now attack by creating a boulder of Green Energy in its claws to hurtle at Samus.

After it has been reduced to about one third of its health, the Omega Griever once more roars and retreats to absorb more Green Energy while summoning Maul Grievers and Maul Griever Bombers. The forearm of its foremost left limb, hindmost right limb, all its claws, and the entirety of its torso aside from a portion of its lower left back and the exposed chest organ become keratinized, and it once more attacks Samus from the walls, now moving significantly faster. Once downed it resumes its previous attacks. It can now alternate between single shockwaves and sets of four, swipes four times with its claws, pounces up to four times in a row, will use its acid spray as a normal attack, and will also now fire a beam of Green Energy from its mouth while spinning, requiring Samus to jump over it if she's farther away or duck under it with Morph Ball if she's close.

When it has about a tenth of its health left, the Omega Griever howls and collapses, allowing its tongue to loll out wit the Psychic Power Bomb powerup at the end. Once Samus gets close it grabs her and roars before latching onto her with its tongue, draining away her energy and restoring its own health. If Samus instead stays out of range, it cannot be damaged while playing possum, but it will eventually give up the act and resume attacking once more until it is slain.

Temporary scan
Alien Morphology: Omega Griever
Already the largest, strongest variant of a Griever, this creature has been further enhanced by absorbing incredible amounts of Green Energy.

It can climb along vertical surfaces and spit large volumes of poisonous fluids. Keratinized skin covers most of its body, making all but its abdomen resistant to beams, missiles, and other weapons.
Logbook entry
The Omega Griever is much larger and stronger than even the unique Brute variant of the Maul Griever. This means it is larger and stronger than any other Griever and, as a result, can be said to be the apex predator of the Great Mines ecosystem.

The large, sharp claws on its two pairs of arms and legs pierce stone, allowing it to move quickly along the cave walls. Green Energy absorption has caused portions of it to undergo keratinization, becoming immune to all types of weapon damage. However, damage dealt to unkeratinized portions of its body can overload subdermal structures and muscles, crashing its nervous system and briefly rendering it unconscious. Damage to the central organ on its abdomen while unconscious can quickly prove fatal.

Trivia[]

  • The Omega Griever plays a similar role to the Omega Pirate from Metroid Prime. Both have "Omega" in their name, serve as the boss of a mine set just before the final area (the Great Mines and the Phazon Mines), and are the largest version of smaller enemies (Maul Grievers and Space Pirates) and their larger variants (Maul Griever Brutes and Elite Pirates). Also, upon their defeat, they both faint, and the Omega Pirate dissolves into liquified Phazon while the Omega Griever dissolves into liquified Green Energy, before they both evaporate.
    • Coincidentally, both Omega bosses took the role that was meant for a different boss originally, with Omega Pirate replacing Kraid due to real-life development shortcomings, and Omega Griever, presumably killing Gravinax in-universe and taking its place as the guardian of the Master Teleporter Key.
