The Phazon Elite, also known as Elite Pirate Alpha, is a heavily mutated Elite Pirate, developed as part of Project Helix. While Elites are usually created by combining Phazon with Space Pirate DNA, this particular Elite variant is the result of a direct infusion with energized Phazon. Only a single one is found in the Phazon Mines in Metroid Prime, and it exhibits several traits that make it unique from the other standard members of its kind.

Samus fought and killed this experiment during her mission on Tallon IV, in the Elite Research room of the Phazon Mines. It guarded one of two Chozo Artifacts found in the Mines, the Artifact of Warrior, which Samus needed to open the Impact Crater.

Biology[]

The Phazon Elite is similar to the usual Elite, but is stated to be infused with an energized form of Phazon. This resulted in its entire body being covered with large, tumorous Phazon growths and sickly veins, to the point that its left eye is completely covered by one such growth. Unlike the Elite Pirates and the Omega Pirate, the Phazon Elite willingly chose not to wield a Plasma Artillery Cannon, but still possesses the Wave Quake Generators as well as the Energy Siphon used by all Elite Pirates. The Phazon Elite demonstrates the capacity to launch its Wave Quake Generators at faster rate than its standard brethren. It has roughly twice as much health as a normal Elite Pirate.

Phazon Elite

Metroid Prime

Temporary scan

Morphology: Phazon Elite
Elite Pirate infused with energized Phazon.

Logbook entry

The Phazon-charged Elite Pirates rely more on their Wave Quake Generators, opting not to carry the vulnerable Plasma Artillery Cannons normally used by Elites. The direct fusing of Phazon into their bodies provides a tremendous level of energy. The drastically lower life span that comes with this process is of little concern to the Pirate Research team.

THE FLAMETHROWER, ARTIFACT OF WARRIOR, AND MORE
"Continue on to the Elite Research area. There's an enemy named Phazon Elite in the vast at the bottom. Use a Power Bomb to free the enemy, then defeat it in battle. This Elite Pirate is stronger than the others you've faced, but the strategy remains the same. Jump over its wave attacks, then blast it in the head while its defenses are lowered. The pattern is simple. Just try to keep you distance and don't get hung up on the equipment scattered around the room.
After you defeat the Phazon Elite, the Artifact of Warrior appears in the center of the room."
Phazon Elite
Found In: Phazon Mines
Recommended Weapon: Plasma Beam, Power Beam
"The Phazon Elite is a more evolved version of the Elite Pirate. It attacks with shock waves in a very similar manner and has the ability to absorb beam weapons. Leap the shock waves and blast the enemy in the face with a charged shot. When its hand is up, avoid firing. Just continue charging until you get the next clean shot."

Metroid Prime: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide[]

PHAZON ELITE
"There's a Phazon Elite Pirate inside a tank, so why would you set it free?! To get the Chozo Artifact, of course. Use a Power Bomb to free the pirate, then get ready for a fight. The creature can block your shots with an oversized hand, so wait for it to raise its arms above its head before you attack. Super Missiles are the most effective weapon. After it's gone, go back to the Ore Processing station."

MINI-BOSS: PHAZON ELITE
"This is the only time you'll fight the Phazon Elite; there are no repeat appearances with this creature as there were with the Elite Pirate. More than a few points of similarity exist between the two creatures though--namely, the Phazon Elite fights just like the Elite Pirate, except he uses the Energy Siphon far more frequently, and doesn't rely on the Plasma Artillery Cannon. After defeating the Phazon Elite you'll receive a Chozo Artifact--the Artifact of Warrior."

Trivia[]

  • A glitch can be utilized when fighting the creature. If the player stands still in a certain area of the chamber where the pirate is fought, it will simply stop attacking and stare at them. This area where the player must stand is roughly near one of the metal support pillars.
  • In the Trilogy version, scanning the Phazon Elite's tank will not give away the fact that it's made out of Bendezium, which may stump some players who were trying to get the fight started unless they resorted to trial and error with Samus' weapons, or consulted a walkthrough.
  • Power Bombs will not initiate the fight if the player used sequence breaking to obtain an expansion but did not collect the power bomb located in the central dynamo.
  • Although only one Phazon Elite is encountered in the game, the logbook entry uses the plural form when describing it, implying that there were more Phazon Elites created.
  • A glitch could happen with the Artifact of Warrior. If Samus killed the Elite but left the room, it will disappear, making it impossible to finish the game. This is fixed in the Trilogy and Remastered versions.
