A Piercing Screech

Ridley using Plasma Breath against Donkey Kong in A Piercing Screech.

Plasma Breath is the neutral special move of Ridley in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When the special move button on the controller is pressed, Ridley will lean backward and charge a fireball in his mouth. It can be released immediately, or charged for a short time, and Ridley will release a line of bouncing fireballs. More fireballs will come from his mouth depending on how long the attack was charged. If all fireballs connect with an opponent, they will be dealt heavy damage. An individual fireball causes 4.4% damage.

Should an opponent hit Ridley's mouth while he is preparing this attack, the fireball will explode in his mouth, dealing 24% damage to him and leaving him stunned temporarily.

Ridley in the Metroid series has the ability to release fire from his mouth, and demonstrates it in many of the battles against him. This attack appears to be specifically based on his bouncing fireballs in the first Metroid game. Those fireballs were spat in succession and bounced on the floor towards Samus. She would have to carefully dodge them or freeze them with her Ice Beam. The "hurtbox" of Ridley's Plasma Breath also references Meta Ridley's weakness during the battles against him in Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Shooting Ridley in the mouth enough would cause him to recoil back in pain. This particular move was also responsible for the death of Samus's mother in the Magazine Z prequel manga.

Trivia

  • The overall move is similar to that of Bowser's fire breath in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, with the only notable difference being that Bowser constantly utilizes a stream of fire while pointed down that grows weaker from prolonged use, while Ridley can either spit a single fireball or a stream of them in a wave pattern depending on whether the player charged up or not.
